How do you 'borrow' a wifi connection?

Are you sure its not a skill saw you have to use?

If this is a secured network using something like WEP or WPA2, you're going to need the key or passphrase to gain access.

Or would a hack saw be more appropriate? I have both.

You can get onto insecure connections or those using certain protocols. Not every protocol can be hacked. People having a wireless should use those protocols that cannot be hacked (yet).

It's idiotic that certain networks still use unprotected wifis. Criminals last year retrieved thousands of cc in a supermarket by tapping in the unsecured WIFI.

These protocols you speak of... Would they limit the spam I receive?

You can download tools to hack WEP. It's better to use WPA (2).

Best thing to defend yourself against SPAM is to not click SPAM and to not give your email address on the internet. Tha last because spammers use bot to screen scrape and harvest emails. The first because clicking on spam will confirm the spammer the email is active (resulting in more spam). Other defences are mostly on the side of the email server (filters, black holes etc.).

Just look for one that is WEP or unsecured.

WEP is easy to crack. Send packets to the ssid and run a sniffer program to sniff the received packets for parts of the authentication key. Once you have enough packets sniffed you will then run a decryption program to decrypt the encrypted packets.

Most likely you don't have a wifi card capable of sniffing and sending packets at the same time. So you either need two wifi cards or you need one that works in dual mode.

Sounds like you need to do a search on google. But lets just say I am borrowing a wifi as we speak.

What I meant with screen scraping is this. Spammers use bots, more or less like search engines, to read and store email addresses. It's better not to leave your email address on forums or social networks where everyone can read it. Or do it with some kind of masking (e.g. my email address is [email protected], delete the "_antibot" to use.)

For your own network (should you want to test the strength of your ow network ;-)

Routers have a control panel. Go to the address [link to 192.168.0.1] or [link to 192.168.1.1] and it should bring it up.

If you haven't password protected the router, you should. But losing the router password is a PAIN, so don't be lazy in making sure you can find it when you need it.

Through this control panel [its like browsing a website] you can look into statistics and into who is connected right now, etc etc.

You ask a complicated question. There are multiple way to do this, but if you are running Windows it gets a little more complicated as the tools to break the network are not as available nor as functional as the Linux/Unix/Mac tools, but it can be done.

Do a search on it on Google, and you will run across several how to's on the subject.

In terms of legality... it would all depend on how the Judge looked on it. 1) What you are asking to do is hacking. I know how because I periodically try to break into the AP's at work to make sure the security is still holding. 2) If the OP is already open, I'm not sure there is anything the law could do about it. If someone don't want someone "borrowing" it, they should configure the security.
