In the morning some old Haitian dude with a chicken bone put curse on I! No joking. He had some kind of a bone and he was waving around and chanting strange words at us. He was not pleased at our arrival |

In a few weeks, when plague's break out over the island and goodwill begins to become more restricted as a result, it's going to become a nightmare. I predict up to half of the population of the island could be gone within a year. I don't believe it's going to recover. Pardon me for interrupting your premature celebration, but I thought it only fair to give you a sporting chance as you are new to this game. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 836101damn good question! In my opinion the best way to help Haiti is the creation of an agricultural infrastructure. The climate is absolutely PERFECT for growing so many tropical fruits like bananas or pineapples. Once upon a time the soil was also wonderful, but now it is been raped. There are sections of this cuticle tropical paradise that is now a desert! Not figuratively, literally. It's a desert, nothing but sand and dust but there are still large places where banana plantations exist. In my opinion small scale farms and plantations are what Haiti really and truly needs more than anything else |

Literally. When it rained sometimes half their house would wash away. Then they would just go get more sticks and more mud and build it back up again. Anonymous Coward User ID: 787970 United States 01/18/2010 01:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I believe you OP. All of a sudden, because of a man-made earthquake (population control?) - the U.S. government wants its broke citizens to give Haitians a handout. Which was worse? Haiti or New Orleans? If the disaster was Palm Beach with its rich Jewish residents, help would be more immediate. Look at the horrible living conditions of the Iraqis and Afghanistans we have bombed into utter poverty and over a million dead. Look at the 2-3 million the U.S. killed in Southeast Asia, not excluding the 58,300 of our own military that perished. The list is long. And so, now, we're suppose to be soooooooooooo concerned about an already impoverished nation? What are we? An ATM machine? Seroiusly, WTF should we care? Interesting, too, OP that you mention putting on the UN uniform. Thanks for posting. |

Take over and have people scream empire building? When do the Haitians get to the point where they are tired of the crime, tired of the corruption and come up with a plan on their own? How much help has been given to them? So if there is a plot by the IMF to keep them poor why don't they do something? BTW, OP thanks for trying to make a difference and help. Sometimes though the only way to help people is to have them learn how to help themselves and they must be willing to do so. oh yes! All of the "help" they have been given! papa doc duvalier was a dictator who seized power in a 1950s. He was completely insane. He became convinced that one of his rivals had turned himself into a black dog using voodoo magic. So he ordered that all black dogs on the entire island of Haiti be killed. He raped and looted that country for 30 years. And here's the thing he did it with the full backing and cooperation of the United States government! The CIA totally had his back. When he died his equally insane son baby Doc took over and continue to the raping and the looting, again with the full backing and cooperation of the United States government. by the time his son was finally overthrown the country was in utter and complete shambles. It remains so to this day |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 601353 Canada 01/18/2010 02:11 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | What are we clueless about? I don't think anyone thought Haiti was a prosperous country. Starvation and malnutrition has been around for many years and no big rush to stop it came before the quake. Mudcakes were and probably are still a big part of the diet. What do you propose we do? The aid will most likely feed them better now than before. I personally would not drop one penny into a REDSHIELD program or any UN program (although my country is a big supporter of the UN)..........so what do we do. I see people starving daily in my own country. I see homeless people daily in my own country. I see widows and orphans in my own country. I help people in my own country and my TAX dollars go out and help those in other countries (which I do not support because it should be helping at home first). Programs like OIL FOR FOOD made me rethink how charity and programs work. They have a widow and orphan that needs to leave Haiti. I will put them up in my small home with my family and try to help them more than any of those programs or UN crap will ever help them in Haiti. |
