Police prepare for more guns in public ' open carry laws
"I openly carry a gun because I can and because I should," Koch, 47, of Battle Creek said. "Why should everyone have insurance on their house or on their car. Just in case."

Koch is among a growing number of people in Michigan and across the country who openly carry guns without violating any law.

"As long as you are able and not a criminal, you should be allowed to open carry," he said. "And I am one who believes if we have a right and don't exercise them they will go away."

A long time gun owner, Koch, an equipment operator, said he and his wife, Melody, who both hold concealed weapons permits, learned about open carry three years ago and now are part of a movement to educate the public about the practice.

Jeffs said the organization has 85 members and he estimates between 200 and 300 people regularly openly carry weapons in public and several hundred others do so occasionally.

"People are starting to realize it is legal," he said. "It brings gun ownership out of the closet. Criminals tend to conceal their weapons and good guys openly carry."

Jeffs, 52, a senior geologist for the state of Michigan, said his group provides information about the law and the practice on its Web site, www.michiganopencarry.org, or a national website, www.opencarry.org and also holds events to educate the public about open carry.

I carry concealed and although open carry is legal I feel I might become a target for gun theft. All someone has to do is jump you...overpower you and take your gun and even use it against you.

I don't see any problem with law abiding people exercising their right to protect themselves.

I am a cop in the sunny Southland with 28 years experience in the field. We like guns, owned them before we piined on the badge, will own them after we take it off the last time.

Our loved ones own them and often trained us with guns before we could read really good. e do not mind, but encourage law abiding, ( that don't meann perfect) ciitizens to own firearms, own lots of ammo and become profficient with them caue we all may have to shoot a shithead off'n each other someday.

This country was not begun as a republic becuase the king of england ( not capitalized on purpose) appreciated our rights. The survival of us who do survive will also not be based on the puppetss of the devil's appreciation of those same rights.

In closing let me saay this.....to all you absolute friggin' idiots whoo hhave saiid over and over again....."when the SHTF, I'll come to your house.....DON"T....or I'll just bory one of you gunss if'n thaings get bad......wake up or die or become a slave on your knees....if ii have to die it will be on my hind legs fighting for however short a period as it lasts.....We are not your enemies....

I hear a lot of 60s sounding "pigs" etc here mosty from yhe rebellious teangers who are going on 45. I know your right even th'' you probably don't.....we are NOT your enemies. We are your early warning system that sadly sso many of you have ignored for the last 20 years......Wake up America it much muchh klatter thhatt yoou think regardless to what you ANT to believe or disbelieve.....thhis may very well be your last warning.

With a good holster and a pocket rocket/pepper mace you will win. Their testimony will not matter since it won't happen if theyy are "daid." o solly. Going for somebodies gun where I lve will gget you dead OR an attempted muurder charge. I too prefer concealed cause they doo knoww till it's gotcha! time. Bu it ain''t worth a case to carry concelaed when it's illegal therebyy precluding you ever carrying legally again.

Re: Police prepare for more guns in public ' open carry laws
"Some people are trying to desensitize the public to not think it's a bad guy carrying a gun, but in Michigan open carry is not as socially acceptable," Fulton said. "I don't advocate for open carry and I don't have anything against the group, who are trying to make it more socially acceptable, but if you open carry, you have to be prepared to deal with the police when they arrive. They have to respond and you are going to be viewed with suspicion. You may have the right to do it, but it is not always the right thing to do."

What is that bullshit??? This kind of mentality is the single biggest problem in this country.

Hey I'm a college student and I want to carry on campus. Guess all the liberalism stops at the second amendment.

I don't tell anyone that I openly carry, but I know many people do. It's not a thing to brag about, because most people get jittery if they hear someone has a firearm on them.

Again, a nation full of pussies.

If more people carried there would be a "critical mass" of law-abiding citizens that are armed - to such an extent criminals would have a near zero chance of walking away alive.

If someone is walking down the street with a gun and holster strapped to his/her waist, I doubt that anyone is going to try to assault him/her.

I agree. If more than half the people in a community carried a firearm, crime would hardly exist. This is why Texas has the lowest crime rates where guns are common, while Chicago and New York City have the highest where guns are banned.

Arm the good guys.

True....but you can't be in a position at all times where someone wouldn't catch you by surprise. For me I will carry it concealed and sometimes I can walk through a parking lot etc. with my finger on the trigger in my pocket and they have no clue.
Sometimes I act like I am not paying attention but that is where they will make their big mistake.
