lapis lazuli User ID: 847343 United States 01/19/2010 10:28 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | it's not bad, could be worse One thing about eggs is this, you should really consider eating the yolks raw. This is because there are lots of nutrients like omega three fatty acids that can be harmed by heat. On the other hand the egg whites should be coked because there are actually anti-nutrients that are buying to b vitamins in the raw form. Those anti-nutrients are neutralized when the white is cooked. remember to get high-quality eggs too. Not just your usual store-bought crap. Try to find somebody in your area that raises chickens that's your best bet |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 824668 Canada 01/19/2010 10:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yeah, the whole cholesterol thing is confusing. One side says that low carb/high protein is the best diet for humans, and then there's the other side that claims a pure vegan diet is the best. I'm currently researching this topic because my doctor told me my cholesterol levels are too high and wants to put me on statins. Before I do that, I'm going to learn as much about cholesterol as I can. |

I know some who have lowered their cholesterol by not buying anything in the market if the box said it had cholesterol, but that basically means a pure vegetable, fruit, nut, legume, grain, water diet. It can be extremely hard for people that genetically produce a lot of cholesterol to lower it. |

Before I do that, I'm going to learn as much about cholesterol as I can. You can control cholesterol with diet and exercise. Statins have muscle-wasting and other bad side effects. If you eat brown rice and other whole grains, you can lower your cholesterol a lot, because whole grains contain tocotrienols, a family of nutrients similar to vitamin E (but not the same thing). Tocotrienols reduce cholesterol by affecting the levels of HGM-CoA in the liver. That's exactly how statins work, too. Only tocotrienols don't have toxic side effects like muscle-wasting. This is why doctors who want their patients to lower their cholesterol will tell them to cut out sugar and starch and eat whole grains. Here's some info on how tocotrienols lower cholesterol from Wikipedia: Tocotrienols and cholesterol reduction The human body makes cholesterol from the liver, producing about 1g of cholesterol each day or 80% of the needed total body cholesterol. The remaining 20% comes from what we eat. Excessive cholesterol is a health risk because gradual fatty deposit clog up the arteries. This will cause blood flow to the brain, heart, kidneys and other parts of the body become less efficient. Cholesterol, though needed metabolically, is not essential in diet. We can lower cholesterol in our body by eating more fruits and vegetables. Tocotrienols can decrease the liver's capacity to manufacture cholesterol. It does so by suppressing the HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme in the liver responsible for cholesterol synthesis.[18] In 1993, American scientists conducted a double-blind placebo controlled study of 50 volunteers at the Kenneth Jordan Heart Foundation and Elmhurst Medical Center. Their results suggested that palm tocotrienols could ease clogged up arteries. Seven high cholesterol patients with narrowing arteries experienced reverse arterial blockage of the carotid artery after consuming palm tocotrienols, while in two the conditioned worsened.[58] This compared to the control group, where none improved and ten worsened. Tocotrienols, especially δ- and γ-tocotrienols, were shown to be effective nutritional agents in treating high cholesterol. In particular, γ-tocotrienol appears to act on a specific enzyme called 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme and suppresses the production of this enzyme, resulting in less cholesterol being manufactured by liver cells.[59] However, studies have demonstrated that the presence of dietary alpha-tocopherol may interfere with gamma-tocotrienol's ability to lower cholesterol[60] and may decrease the absorption of tocotrienol.[61] Also cholesterol-lowering: lots of regular exercise, fruits, vegetables and omega-3 fatty acids. |

Before I do that, I'm going to learn as much about cholesterol as I can. Most vegetables and grains need to be cooked to provide us good nutrients. Raw is good for roughage and fiber, but that's about it for many vegetables. Human digestive tracks aren't designed to digest most raw plant matter except for fruit. Meat, especially raw, takes much less energy to digest (not suggesting raw meat, but putting it in context with a natural human state - pre-agricultural) - no need for extra long intestines and/or colons, no need for more than one stomach - things that strict herbivores need to digest plant matter (things humans don't have). That might be a clue as to what diet is natural / ideal for a human being. |

Google "rath + lipoprotein a + lysine + vitamin c” you will find all the information you need. Statin drugs prevent you from utilizing cholesterol and therefore raise your risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's |

You get some nutrients out of eating them raw, but more if they are cooked (plant cell walls are the problem - indigestible to us and they keep nutrients away from us - think juicer.) Another confusion here is that some of the things we consider vegetables are actually fruit - tomatoes, for example. Eating a raw carrot, say, will, of course, give you some beta carotene, but more fiber. If you steam it, you will get more beta carotene out of the plant. Also, a juicer breaks down those pesky plant cell walls... |

First check your ratio of good to bad cholesterol, and your homocysteine levels. Research how to interpret those levels, not all doctors take the time to look at the full profile before leaping to prescribe statins. Then, take a few months and aggressively go after your cholesterol, using a really healthy diet like a mediterranean diet. Guess what, you need lots of high quality omega 3s plus the best quality olive oil you can find, and other healthy oils. Good luck, you may very well succeed if you do this right. Many do. |

If your ability to utilize cholesterol is inhibited so is your ability to repair nerve tissue and to keep a healthy brain.
