CALIFORNIA DAM CRISIS COULD KILL MILLIONS!! - UPDATED!!! | |
Being * gnieB User ID: 609135 United States 01/22/2010 01:26 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The money just to rehab the 53 "deficient" dams alone is just a little shy of $700 MILLION, of which, only $20 million has been applied. If they can't even get the dams fixed, what makes anyone think the money to manage the water could ever be implemented? Seems they can't even PROTECT the water supply with dam repair, let alone spend all that EXTRA money, over and above repair costs to manage it... Quoting: Dream Killer'Well'... (no pun intended) what is your constructive positive solution? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 871044[link to www.csub.edu] When you say Delta dam, do you mean the Folsom dam on the American River? There are lots of levees in the Delta, but I don't know of a dam. I've been worried about the Folsom dam for several weeks now, even before the storms hit. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 864672 United States 01/22/2010 01:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Most 'accidents' are avoidable. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 802656True and since the late 70's many studies were made talking about the declining condition of America's reservoirs and dams. But people would rather spend billions on social programs than invest in maintaining infrastructure. That works until you can't flush your toilet or the dam breaks. u would rather spend trillions on wars without end |

Mickeyblue User ID: 330969 United States 01/22/2010 02:27 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There is no and has been no "delta dam". The delta area has over a thousand m iles of sloughs and river waterways. It is referred to as the Everglades of the West. Sacramento mean level above sea level is 15' and with rising coastal ocean waters it will flood and salinify the rivers, the Sacramento San Joaquin rivers. To Majik who is waiting for disaster to hit California, you are a freaking narcissistic jerk. Half the nations food comes from California farmers, not to mention most of the technology generated herein this country , too. Nearly 40M people reside here and most of them came from every other state in this union and from all over the world. |

If you take a look at the full report, [link to netidentity.us] At the bottom of the article, below the graphics, you'll see a link that will take you to a directory of the Cali State Reps. I suggest putting their feet to the fire on this in as loud a voice as you can manage, and get anyone ELSE you know to do the same, bring in local media, make a big enough noise, to get heard. THEN, (maybe) SOMEONE will get the message and this problem can at least get addressed and move toward a solution that would mitigate this situation by FORCING the local govt. to take SOME kind of action to fix these dangerous dams that have been neglected for FAR too long now... |

I've been worried about the Folsom dam for several weeks now, even before the storms hit. Apologies...I stand corrected. It's the California Delta. Saw something on tv a few months back discussing the gravity of the situation with the levees in the delta area, it's history, and dire need for attention. It was fascinating, but scarey all the same, given the drinking water provision for the state. |

Quoting: Dream KillerProblem with the dam situation though, is that California is BROKE! Yeah, maybe a catastrophe CAN be "avoided" but is it likely? Probably NOT! This is what kills me. California is broke. How did that happen? Those sky high property values, the billions in revenues generated by Hollywood, all those millionaire film execs and actors, the tourism revenues. Shit, California should be the richest state in the union, running a budget surplus. Oh yeah, I forgot, none of those millionaires pay taxes. |

Dream Killer (OP) User ID: 871111 United States 01/22/2010 07:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Finally, officially, an EQ "swarm" event has been recorded at Yellowstone. IF this ground pressure transfers to the San Andreas, as it did to Yellowstone from HAITI, then the ship is sunk! The "swarm" at Yellowstone didn't begin until 5 days after Haiti, using that as a compass, we should know by proximity within the next 2 to 3 days if California will have an EQ event on TOP of the mudslides, etc. ALL of this is a problem for the dilapidated dams this forum is discussing... |
