Athens - Greek police on Friday arrested two Britons and a Greek man in connection with two arson attacks against a synagogue on the southern Mediterranean island of Crete earlier this month, reports said.

Officials were still searching for a fourth man believed to be a US citizen, who is suspected along with the others of setting fire to the synagogue in the city of Hania on January 5, causing extensive damage but no injuries.

One of the Britons arrested is believed to have carried out similar attacks in the past. All three men were expected to appear before a public prosecutor with the next few days.

The attacks have caused great alarm within Greece's 8,000 strong Jewish community.
