Strange Thunder in Western Ky last night.... anyone else?
We had a line of storms come through late last night...with some lightening..

and then... the most bizarre thunder i have ever heard or felt.

It started out as a low rumble and then keep building in intensity until it was rattling every window in the house..

and it just keep going and going...annddd going.

I looked over at my roomie and we didnt say anything...we both just sat there and the longer it went the more i was ready to hit the floor...

for a split second i had to entertain the notion that it might be a asteroid/comet/meteor streaking by up in the atmosphere because it was weird..

I would say that it lasted for roughly 30-40 seconds..

that doesnt sound like a long time but thunder just doesnt last that long..

anyway.. just curious if anyone else along the lines of this storm system heard long rumbling house shaking thunder as well.....

sounds like the storms that moved through here around 6 last night

didn't last long, but when it thundered it started off real low and far away sounding...built into a massive growling thunder that shook the whole house

It's normal....you have to wonder if a tornado is coming from the long ass rumbles.

only a few times

usually when there is a squall line we get that low rumbly thunder, it's not uncommon

but the low stuff that builds and builds and seems to last forever doesn't happen often.

I remember "hiking"(yeah, that's it!) during a really bad storm in sw Ky. It was bad, and there we were, kinda crouched on the edge of a field, tornado winds and lightening crashing all around us, drenched to the bone. The weather gods tried to kill us both going in, and coming out, it was quite memorable. Fucking crazy, really.

I have heard thunder like this before.
And I saw "lightning" ABOVE the clouds.
May have been TLEs (sprites, elves...).

heard the same thing here in Athens GA around 2:30 to 3:00 am; a storm went through but the thunder sounded like a train engine that was increasing his rpm lasted for about 30 to 45 sec and then we heard it a little further in the distance again. strange

Yep,southern Indiana too and It woke me up. Gf and I were talking about how weird it is to have thunder and lightening in January.

now i know thunder happens..but not like this

and now we have this reported all the way from arkansas to new york..

and the times would go along with the movement of the line of storms..

what are the odds that all these people scattered along the line of this storm system would hear the exact same kind of thunder?

im not saying its woo woo.. would just like to know

You should recall it happening before, I know I recall it well. Rumbles so hard and long it sounds like a tornado coming through.

I don't know how the storm patterns go in western and NW Ky, but The whole southern part, along with a lot of Tn, etc, gets some good ones. Mini tornado alleys you could say. Tn gets it worse than Ky I think. Nashville and surroundings has it share. Seems like tornados and nasties go through barren and hart counties(Ky)(and around there) pretty regularly, also.

i KNOW what rolling thunder sounds like...

but when you hear a low rumble that sounds far away and then gets close and closer and louder and louder and EVERY single window in the house shakes for over 10 seconds and you tense up and cringe because youre sure its a meteor or plane about to come through the roof... uh thats a little different...i have called several friends and they agree that it wasnt some random rolling thunder..

weather changes...crazy times

if you didnt hear it then plz dont try to tell me what it is

I remember hearing this some time last night but I can't recall the time. Did not shake windows but did get louder and louder and last an abnormal length of time.

I looked outside to see WTH was happening. Didn't see anything, not even lightening.

Northern Alabama.

Exactly right the way you described it. NW Ohio here. I thought it might be an earthquake. We know what thunder sounds like.....but it wasn't like any thunder I've ever heard.
