I quit smoking 2 months ago and now my chest feels tight
My chest didn't hurt (at least I never noticed) when I was a smoker... but now, after two months of ZERO smoke, my chest feels tight and weird. Anyone else ever hear of, or experience this?

Thanks!

BTW, Cold Turkey was my method.

Thanks for the responses. I will try the steam bath tonight... and that would be great news if the tightness means HEALING. :-)

Just to clarify: My chest didn't just start feeling tight tonight. Probably 3 to 4 days after I quit smoking, I noticed a definite tightness and pressure in my chest. The weird sensation sort of goes all the way up into my windpipe. I thought it would pass, but now nearly 2 months later, I still feel the weird tightness and pressure. I have been thinking that it is caused by the sudden stopping of smoking, but I don't know if anyone else has had the same sensations. Also, I'm wondering how long it will last.

Re: I quit smoking 2 months ago and now my chest feels tight
Are you having cramps from eating something that you really should not, or having a sickness now that may affect muscle tightness?

Then, again maybe you are suppose to feel a little that way, but then I have to quit so I do not really know, and anyone that use to smoke usually does not say.

They just state that it is hard to do. I suppose it is some sort of phychological addition about smoking, but to me, since I may not hale as deeply I think it is that your brain may be playing some tricks on you as well as your muscles.

Someone stated it takes about 6 months or so to really have it go. I guess I will be smoking less and I know that I will eventually feel better.

Or else if you are old enough get a pnemonia shot. One time does it, according to the Doc.

Well, go see a doctor if necessary, well no, they just take more tests, and never do anything except for a lot of money because of insurance, another thing that has to go in the USA.

Well, good luck, and that is more than I get in this crappy world.

Oh, it may be a physical reaction because it is additive. So learn deep relaxation methods and there are a number. Please do not say that they do not work, because I know like the self-hypnosis it is, that it does.

To be honest, I wasn't motivated to quit at all.

Seriously, the day before I quit, I had purchased a new carton of Marlboro's.

What happened was that I woke up feeling sort of fluish... I went outside anyway to have my morning cig, and when the smoke hit my lungs, it felt like I was being burned alive. I ended up totally sick (viral upper resp infection) for about 2 weeks, and just never had that next cigarette.

Now, almost 2 months have passed, and the thought of having a cig still reminds me of the terrible burning feeling, and I no longer crave them. Cannot even stand the smoke smell.

Weird, eh?

Cold Turkey is a better method than Wild Turkey because the
latter might induce nicotine cravings and/or crazy actions
not recalled until the morning after or at all...

Please go find a professional acupuncurist who will be able to help you heal your lungs both with acupuncture and with herbs.

I wonder if the constriction is a reaction to not having the narcotic effects of nicotine; your body was used to having that relaxing drug and now it doesn't have it.

Chinese medicine will likely help you release that tension and counter the effects of the drugs you have been ingesting through your cigarettes for all these years.

Don't give up!

I quit five months now (smoked 30+ years) and just in the last few weeks my chest is tight usually followed by productive coughing. I feel the tightness in my throat as well but I take a anti-anxiety medication which has been working for me.

Any chest pain? Is the tightness mostly at night? Could be a bit of pleurysi which is an infection. Keep an eye on how you are feeling.

If you had an upper infection then it is possible it has become 'walking pneumonia' a secondary infection which isn't hitting you hard enough to lay you out, but hard enough to effect your breathing/lungs.

I would strongly suggest you return to your doctor and get an exam and have him listen to your lungs.

I wasn't ready to quit either, but needed to. The more I smoked those FSC's, the worse my allergies got, and a nasty cough developed. Then the price went out of control. So I did lots of homework. You can save tons of money, smoke a much safer smoke, and save hundreds of $'s a month.
What I would add to my info is the best vendor I've found now is [link to www.cignot.com] . Best prices, fast shipping.

I too am a cold turkey quitter and getting the exact same symptoms as you describe. They started some two or three weeks ago after a three month quit. I'm hoping they are healing pains , but one never knows .
Did you ever get an answer that satisfied you ?

^This.

If the lungs are ok and you don't have an infection it may also be a withdrawal symptom.

I have heard of many smokers having problems like panic attacks after quitting cold turkey.

It's probably a brain chemistry thing.

hay fever, I actually started smoking years ago because it dried out my sinuses during hay fever season. Try oregano products to get rid of hay-fever. Do it two years and your allergy will be gone for good too.

It takes time for your lungs to expel all the tar built up in them. It took me about 5 months before I coughed up some serious junk in the shower, it was almost pitch black.
