In the hindu texts it talks of people going insane on it, so there might be some truth to it being bad for some people. Those people probably had something going on in their lives that would make them insane when constantly revealed to their ways. There are still Sadhus in India that sit there literally all day blazing down, they're not the ones trying to come over here living the american dream of chemical lawns and BMW ownership.
Because it's illegal, most of it is grown indoors and for profit. Indoor weed might be stronger, but it's not the stuff your Grsnpa and George Washington smoked. They amp the light time from a natural 10 - 15 hour day sun to a 24 hour fake sun (like a fake tan - look at those girls, yuk) and also feed them inorganic fertilizers full of heavy metals and other toxins (like a McDonalds/Pharma zombie). Being indoors creates other environmental variables like pests and molds, which they spray the plants down with more chemicals to counteract. The end product is like mutant weed that probably isn't the best to smoke all the time and has people hooked on the junky high they get from it.
Combustion of anything creates carbon monoxide, so there is that negative of smoking anything. Also most people love their "bowls" which they mostly light with a bic lighter, so they're actually huffing and addicted to the benzenes and butanes - you'll see someone sitting there in the wind trying to light their bowl over and over, hard to get the lighter to stay lit, and they're basically blasting their weed with chems and then inhaling it straight.
Not such a black and white issue, which I think this plant itself will teach you a lot about black and white. I'd say once you get it, step away - and if you ever veer to black or white again too extreme and you're conscious enough to know so, go back to it for another glimpse.
