A huge cosmic explosion could have caused a mass extinction on Earth 450 million years ago, according to American scientists.
A gamma ray burst could have caused the Ordovician extinction, killing 60 per cent of all life.
These cosmic blasts are the most powerful explosions in the Universe.
What does the future hold for you?
More unusual stories
The scientists think a 10-second burst near Earth could deplete up to half of the planet´s ozone layer.
With the ozone layer devastated, the Sun´s radiation could have killed off much of the life on land and near the surface of oceans and lakes.
Gamma ray bursts are rare occurrences, but scientists estimate that at least one must have occurred near the Earth in the past one billion years.
The gamma-ray bursts occur when a star collapses in on itself or when two neutron stars collide.
"A gamma ray burst originating within 6,000 light-years from Earth would have a devastating effect on life," said co-author Dr Adrian Melott, an astronomer at the University of Kansas, US.
"We don´t know exactly when one came, but we´re rather sure it did come - and left its mark. What´s most surprising is that just a 10-second burst can cause years of devastating ozone damage."
Although deep sea creatures would be protected from the effects of the burst, surface-dwelling plankton and other life near the top of the ocean would not survive.
This would have had huge implications for other life forms, because plankton form the foundation of the marine food chain, as they provide for animals which are subsequently eaten by larger species.
Swift, a Nasa space mission launched in November 2004, is currently investigating the phenomenon of gamma ray bursts from Earth orbit. [link to www.cyberspaceorbit.com] |

UNQUOTE.
OZONE IS FORMED BY THE ACTION OF UV LIGHT ON ORDENARY O2. THUS SHOULD A GRB CAUSE RAPID DECAY OF OZONE, MORE WOULD BE INSTANTLY PRODUCED AFTER THE GRB PASSED.
IN FACT AS I UNDERSTAND IT, OZONE HAS A LIFE OF ABOUT 40 MINS AND IS CONTINUOUSLY RENEWED.
THUS IT SEEMS TO ME THAT HOLES ARE CAUSED BY LACK OF UV LIGHT TO GENERATE OZONE RATHER THAN POLLUTANTS.

We need to understand what´s creating the gamma bursts, if they are relativly local and if they are increasing in freq., etc...

Has anyone teased the idea that these bursts that zap Swift then sometimes are located by the scopes and dishes--or not...

Abstract
A correlation between the incidence of influenza pandemics and
increased cosmic ray activity is made. A correlation is also made
between the occurrence of these pandemics and the appearance of
bright novae, e.g., Nova Eta Car. Four indices based on increased
cosmic ray activity and novae are proposed to predict future
influenza pandemics and viral antigenic shifts.

This was a bright, long burst, with many peaks in the emission. Swift´s X-ray Telescope (XRT) has onboard software to let it find the source, but the burst was too faint in the kind of X-rays seen by the XRT to find. A few hours later, ground-based analysis did find a very weak source in the XRT data.
The burst is well-placed for follow-up observations. Two observatories report a very faint source at magnitude 21.3, but it is unclear if this is the optical afterglow of the burst or not because it is close to the limit of what can be seen. Most other observatories report detecting no afterglow.
The Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope on Swift reports a faint, rapidly fading UV source a few seconds after the burst, but it is well away from the position of the burst reported by the X-ray Telescope. Follow-up analysis has shown this may not be a real source. We await further analysis
GRB 050412B
This is most likely not a burst, but a trigger due to the X-ray source Hercules X-1. We await further analysis to confirm this. [link to www.cyberspaceorbit.com] |

No..you will not die unless by suicide from all the bewildering things about to wack Earth. Jupiter will soon commence its thunderbolts season, the Sun will shutdown and people will shit their pants.
The Sun roars to life after several days of shutdown. Watch the heavens from that point forward; for thereafter is The Catastrophe. |
