Quoting: Anonymous Coward 838773i don't read much but i want to be more intellectual so i want to start again. If you really want to be more intellectual I would suggest you avoid the new pop-culture stuff and go for the classics. Some to consider... The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger (he just died so it is topical now). Nineteen Eighty-Four or Animal Farm, by George Orwell Lord of the Flies, by William Golding Moby Dick, by Herman Melville Catch-22, by Joseph Heller The Devine Comedy, by Dante Alighieri Hamlet, by William Shakespeare (actually Sir Francis Bacon, but that is another discussion) The Master and Margarita, by Mikhail Bugakov (My all-time favorite novel, but is a very complex story translated from Russian) Don Quixote, by Miguel de Cerventes (my second favorite novel, but is impossible to accurately translate from its original and is a difficult read) |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 838773i don't read much but i want to be more intellectual so i want to start again. some books i liked: canterbury tales cuz of the medieval setting dark tower #1 (only one ive read but it was cool.) lotr #1 and #2 havent read #3 yet but i dont feel like reading something i already know the plot too since seeing the movie stephen king "cell" was ok but got kind of hard to follow towards the end so i never finished it "I am legend" started off ok i guess not really into zombies but i told myself i can do it though i never got past the first chapter. if u like trashy time pass fiction, lawrence sanders and ed mcbain are best.Commandement series and deadly sins series of lawrence sanders is the best. Also you can read robert parker just to pass time.scott turrow, john lescroat, and don't forget LEE CHILD(one of the best writers).Carl hiassen writes humerous mysteries.Tom sharpe writes delightful comedy.I will tell u more if u reply this post |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 871317 United States 02/01/2010 07:07 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Ted Dekker is an amazing author. He has a crazy good ability to put to words great stories. I like all his books but if you are looking for a good long read try his RED, GREEN, BLACK & WHITE series. I dont remember the exact order except that WHITE just came out. It is the last one he wrote. He is a Christian author but dont let that scare you. His writings are NOTHING like the 'Left Behind' stuff. He could be compared to Stephen King or any of the other great psy-fi writers. (I think King even wrote a praise comment on one of Dekker's books.) |
