Where dogs do their damage is being able to lock their jaw when they've gripped something and thrash around, using their weight to rip and tear. Their bite itself isn't very strong.

In this test the 'bite force' isn't isolated, and includes the force from them using their weight after gripping, so of course you're going to find the heaviest ones with the most force.

I'm a real blast to watch mythbusters and other pseudo science shows with, as you can imagine.

I guess according to the video, if bite strength were the only determinant of a protection animal you would use a turtle to guard your loved ones and home.

Seriously, although a reasonable bite is one thing to consider, (most burglars would not be intimidated by a Chihuahua) other factors such as intelligence, trainability, speed and agility certainly play a role.
There are many good breeds of dog for this job. The most important parameter is a dog that you trust, and that trusts you.

I happen to be partial to my dobies, but have had wonderful German Shepards that have saved my household on several occasions from unpleasant incidents.
The largest dog that I have owned was a giant Alaskan Malamute, who was a real sweetheart and loved everyone. She could have easily taken the head of a Doberman or Shepard off with her giant jaws, but she was a lover and not a fighter. The only thing to fear was getting knocked off your feet if she wanted to play with you.

Having a trustworthy dog is a wonderful addition to your household and I hope all GLPers find one, in breed that they personally relate to.

I was playing with my Jack Russell had a pair of welding gloves on and he bit through them onto my thumb, lost the nail.

Most dogs except the toy ones can inflict damage but against a big wide jawed dog you better have some major backup.

How does the bite force even matter if the dog doesn't have a brain to use it?

That is why I'd say wolves, german shepherd dogs, and malanois are much more dangerous than a slobbering 200lb goober.

I love how the only two dogs anyone was really afraid of in the video were the GSD and the Wolf.

Intelligence and agility go a long way. And when those teeth are on a throat or wrist the difference between 300lb and 500lb bite aren't really noticeable... Especially when the bastard is fast and trying to rip you apart.

my sister has a bull mastiff [zeus]. dumb as a bucket of rocks if you ask me....the previous dog [bruno] was a rottweiller, and even though i'd be weeks between visits there there he knew i was one of the family and always accepted me. zeus, on the other hand, has yet to wake up to the fact that i'm not coming there to murder everyone. i handled him as a puppy, and made even more effort to establish a connection with HIM as i did with bruno, but to no avail.

from my experience, "loyal" in the dog business is a euphemism for STUPID.

bull mastiffs are worth the trouble for home protection, IF you have a very good lawyer and don't rate high intelligence as a priority. always remember though that the barking from your dog does not guarantee that that it will physically defend you against an attacker.

A Rotts bite is only 325.mastiff is 500 psi plus and its a bigger breed.Mines has a neck that is 28 inches.No one owns a Hyena.Pits bites or only 230 pounds and they are tiny dogs

I understand Airedale Terriers have quite a bite, and are a good breed for 'protection'. They may not be the best, however they are also not one of the breeds likely to be banned by cities and or counties. They don't get lumped in with a lot of the other breeds that resemble a Pit Bull in other words.

Have seen several "big dog" owners get ankle bit... lol the lessened fear of a barking dog from being around schutzhund training can come back to 'bite ya'.

Saw a short home video years ago of a protection routine trained jack russell, the viewers sides hurt after the showing from laughing so hard. The russell was very convincing and obviously did not care or perceive his size difference. He would get a full grip on the sleeve and clamp on like a champ.

Are you asking about the Airedale? They are around 65 pounds. There are bigger ones being bred. Oorang Airedales I believe is what they call them.

They were used by German police before the German Shepherd existed. A very good athletic dog, needs exercise!!! They do not have the bred in aversion to biting a person that many of the pit type terriers have.

Malinois - Best protection breed. I've seen a 60 lbs Malinois make a 275lbs crook cry to his mommy.
