Natural antibiotic for infected eye?
My dog has an eye infection. Now I know colloidal silver is a good eyedrop for eye infections -- it used to be used on humans for eye infections before artificial antibiotics were discovered.

I have put some colloidal silver in her eye.

But I was wondering what other natural antibiotics I could be helping her with. I can give her some garlic, olive leaf extract and other things in her food to help her kick the infection. But are there other topical antibiotics that aren't too strong to put in the eye?

The infection doesn't look too bad. I wouldn't be able to get to a vet anyways because we are snowed in.

It just occurred to me I could wash her eye with a green or white tea solution instead of plain water, since that is anti-bacterial too.

Re: Natural antibiotic for infected eye?
colloidal silver!

Infection started in the evening. Used cs. Still went to bed with a bit swollen, red and itchy eye, thinking that I am going to wake up unable to even open my eye.

But in the morning... Nothing.

Penicillin comes from the white and blue mould from old bread. So perhaps give your dog old bread?

The Russians lost less soldiers due to illness compared to other nations in the trenches during WWI because they often got "outdated" bread with moulds.

LOL You just reminded me of something I read a while back... garlic was called "Russian penicillin" because they used it extensively in WWII when they ran out of the other stuff.

Re: Natural antibiotic for infected eye?
Boric acid is used for pink eye, but I don't have any in the house.

I did find info on the traditional use of lavendar for infection:

Lavender is renowned for its antibiotic properties. Studies have shown that the essential oil of lavender, particularly when combined with Geranium oil, is capable of killing some Staph infections. Other studies have reported that lavender is good for treating ear infections, and is mild enough to treat such symptoms in children. Recently, four new chemicals have been isolated from lavender plants, and are believed to be beneficial for the treatment of candida. There is ongoing research into these four substances.

I have a lot of lavendar flower buds for tea.

Re: Natural antibiotic for infected eye?
I think I have enough info to infuse a natural herbal eyewash that is a saline solution made with a strong tea from lavendar, white tea and some other stuff. I'll clean her eyes periodically with this, and then put silver eye drops in after the cleanings.

Then I'll put garlic and olive leaf extract in her food.

don't over do it...

If you make colloidal silver properly it should do the job on it's own....

Open cap of Echinecea and sprinkle over food....only give tiny portion of food so you can repeat the process every hour or two....six or seven hours from now your doggie should show considerable healing. Continue until you feel doggie is well.

Yes, it looks like the there's a tradition of making herbal eyewashes for infections:

Proper hygiene is the first priority in dealing with infections in the eyes or the eyelids, utilize a good herbal eyewash to cleanse the eyes and the parts of the face near the eyes, many times a day and particularly before applying ointments or creams to those regions. Redness in the eyes, inflamed and swollen eyes can be reduced and alleviated by using the herb known as the eyebright, this same herb can also be utilized to decrease the level of irritation felt during conjunctivitis, and other conditions of the eyes such as blepharitis, including styes of the eyelids, or any sort of eye injuries and trauma. Other excellent alternatives to eyebright are herbal eyewashes made utilizing herbs such as the chamomile or the goldenseal; these have similar actions and remedial effects. Use a piece of cheesecloth to finely filter all eyewashes before utilizing them.

I don't have eyebright, but I do have chamomille and goldenseal.

I think I will make a strong tea that combines the antimicrobial teas, add the right amount of salt to it to make it mildly saline, and use that to wash her eye.

Then I'll put the silver eye drops in after each cleaning.
