I went to 4 colleges. My oldest dropped out of high school. After that, I set him up with a union construction job and he makes close to 6 figures yearly.

Making all that money with no tuition to pay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

You learn a lot more in trade schools people. These college institutions are just what they say they are.... an institution.

Remember, college is a business. Bet some of you thought they were there to educate you. Wish I knew this years ago. I'm still pay off my tuition(s).

you are a jackass and thankfully not my father. That can of statement can only be made once a career path is chosen. In some cases it does not make sense to go to college and in other cases it does. Wait till your kid grows up to make such a decision.

one last question?

your son grows up, he does not want a job in construction, or any other trade for that matter. What will you tell him then?

and finally a childish statement I have to make....

fuck the unions they are a pain in the ass, I swing every job I can to non union.

I paid for my ex-wife to go to school for ten years to become a secretary. That's 10 years of tuition, books, daycare, housekeeper, and I'm sure there are other expenses I'm not thinking of now. School is not for everyone.
Quoting: BRIEF AND TO THE POINT

Could probably learn to be a secretary over the internet. I had a great link to online schools for free. Math, computers all the way up to engineering. They have a youtube account with thousands of videos.

The best business to start today i believe is online sales of whatever product, worldwide, Since walmart only sells made in china.

That's what they should turn colleges into.

Trade schools.

Pick your field. Chemistry. Art. Physics.

And focus on that. Cut the fat off the curriculum. So, people can get to work and earn money.

But I suppose the 4 years does provide you with the chance to meet someone and play the field til you find a suitable mate.

I loved doing my degrees just for their own sake.

Learning everything there is to know about a subject you love and then being encouraged to find out new things about it is awesome!

Granted, it cost me a few quid but I've had a twenty year career out of it. Not rich, but happy..and I know lots of interesting things! lol

I'd recommend university to anybody - but a person's got to do it because they like the subject, not because they think it will magic up a career & big bucks.
Everything is permitted..

Re: Finally!!!!!! I've convinced my 13 yr. old not to go to college
OP, I signed up for a night class at a top private university near me. I was excited that this cool class was being offered at night in the continuing education program and anyone could walk in and sign up for it.

Let me tell you, I dropped that class like a rock after one week. Aside from the fact that it was run in a little group of dysfunctional people who kept griping over their program being thrown off campus and marginalized by being put in continuing ed, the class handouts were ghetto and unreadable, the material covered was so simplistic and limited the videos on YouTube on the topic were better, and the bitches were unprofessional and rude. They were fawning over students from the regular day program and snubbing the continuing ed students. One teacher wouldn't even make eye contact with an overweight black woman in the class and God only knows what I did to piss her off because she got angry every time I said something and said "No" every time I asked a question.

I shot an email to the registrar saying it was the most unprofessional behavior I'd ever seen and asked for my money back. I didn't drop $720 on a 2 credit class to be snubbed by some skank who wasn't going to teach much of anything and acted like she was putting up with us.

That experience reminded me of how bad academics are.

Those people could use a dose of having to make it in the real world.

The only thing I knew about electronics was which side was positive and negative on a battery. For the past 4 months I've been watching a lot of how to videos online. Now I have a bunch of motorized toys zipping all over the place, including a solar operated vehicle I made using a water bottle.

I wonder how much it would of cost me to learn everything I have so far, in college.

I worked my ass off, going to school while I had a job and a family. I went into debt, and paid that debt off.

So after 7 years of college...

I've made a shit load of money, helped all 6 of my kids get established, and have a secure future.

Yes, I don't always like my job. But the decision to go to college was one of the best decisions I made.

I went into the army for 6 years to pay off college, and go to get my Master degree (Boston University, overseas campus, Heidelberg, Germany)

It worked for me. Best ace in the hole is the Master Degree.
[/quote

Not many of us entered the military to get a GI bill to help pay for our college like you. My niece in in college right now on a GI bill. Now, how many people can you find with the same sentiments as yours who was never in the service and came from a poor family?
 Quoting: depompey

My husband served 23 years on active duty. He joined the Army in 1981 and he STILL had to pay for 25% of his education (masters degree) under the GI bill. It depends on when you went into the military and what other assests you have (he has been investing since he was 18 years old so he didnt quaily for a pell grant to pay for the other 25% of his education. My junior enlisted soldiers (the bulk of the military are broke asses, not because of low pay but because of poor choices like popping out kids at 18 and because they are irresponsible, so they do get pell grants though.

Re: Finally!!!!!! I've convinced my 13 yr. old not to go to college
College often has very little to do with getting better jobs. The jobs aren't even there. Government gives grants because they want to brainwash with marxism. It's the tenth plank of marxism, government education. The education system just keeps getting Bigger and BIGGER, with many students going right back into the system as liberal teachers.

There are a lot of really disappointed college grads working in other fields than their educated one. Even doctors find their field too regulated from the top down under hospitals more and more. Doctors go into private business or trucking and construction. That was even on 60 Minutes. The days of the medicade mansions are over.

The new world order is antichrist. Their counter-reformation is anti-Bible, anti-family, anti-nationalism. their world governemt and the Vatican's Roman Empire are one a nd the same. The Jesuit's and the Rockefellers founded our education system, worldwide.

They also run the hospitals, most food corporations, the auto industry, hollywood and the media.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 885193

Exactly. This is off topic but property taxes (what funds public education at least at the K-12 level) are also communist. One of the planks of communism is no private ownership of property and thats exactly what property taxes prevent. There is no such thing as private property if you live in a state that taxes your property. Even if you own your property outright you still never own it because you have to rent it from the gov. Dont believe me? Stop paying your property taxes on your paid off peice of property and see who ends up with it. I can guarantee you that it wont be you.

True. You learn to do and excel at lots of trades without a formal education but the system has made it where you arent even considered for jobs, regardless of how well you would preform, unless you have a degree. In principal, I have to agree with the OP. The offering of a higher education has become a scam. I guess that's free enterprise; there’s always a sucker out there to make a buck off of. We have folks that have paid thousands of dollars for a piece of paper and they still don't know how to use a can opener or think. An education meant something many years ago and was respected; now it’s just a joke that has been highjacked by those with an agenda.

Speaking of math problems and reasoning. Tell me, young person A gets into a debt of $10,000 at an early age, say before 25, saves nothing, and has to pay that loan back at 2.5% interest.

Young person B avoid debt, works, saves the $10,000 and puts it into a retirement account averaging a 4% return, compounded annually, until the age of 65.

Between age 25 and 30, young person B goes and gets the same $10,000 degree, so that the earning potential about evens out for the rest of both of their lives.

At retirement, who is better off?

Re: Finally!!!!!! I've convinced my 13 yr. old not to go to college
Way to not let your child make their own decisions, but yet, they are 13 and could still change his/her mind. Education is what one makes of it. For some it's a passion, for some it's about personal growth and/or accomplishment, for some it's about money, status, power, etc. There are all types of different people in the world with different interests, strengths, abilities, intellects, passions, predispositions, and skill sets. If you are a grown man with children and have not figured this out I feel pretty bad for you and your children.

You're just as bad as the majority of people in this world. Why? Because you think your way is the correct way. Newsflash, it isn't. What may be good for you is not necessarily good for others.

And the majority of the responses here show an obvious lack of schooling, heart, or anything resembling a broad understanding of humanity. There is nothing wrong with tech school, nothing wrong with community colleges, and nothing wrong with universities, they all offer something unique and consequently all have something to offer to those that pursue educations through them. It's the application and the motivation of those attending and sometimes teaching where we see the most of our problems in the education system, at least in the US.

Formulas, will determine the degree of comfort in your later years, based on your savings, and whether you will qualify for a house loan. Now it's better schooling, to become a better slave/worker...no independence.

The finer points of living in this country may be formulaic to a degree, i.e. when you're dealing with the economic aspects, but life has a funny way of throwing in unexpected variables all of the time. One of those being the myth of job security in the reality that is today.

You're going to have to give me a few minutes to drag up some comparison statistics between the 1930s and today, but this 20-something generation is having to experience the foothold years of generating stable wealth and savings during a recession where security and opportunity is severely diminished. I'm fine with the fact I will work till I die, I've never had it too easy, and have at least been instilled with a good work ethic from my life's experiences. But I do know many in my generation that do not have that same view nor the work ethic to match. Bad for them I suppose, but we are at a point where this generation's complaint about being "Lost" is a little more valid than let's say those my age in the 90s or 50s.

The problem is far larger.

Leaving a personal business for the family would be much better for the family and for the country. All we are doing by looking for jobs with degrees is feeding the corporate owned system on a spiral downwards.
