Because you have been preceded that day by 50 other guys who said, "Hello," and when she smiled back politely and said, "Hello," they stopped and tried to get her to suck him off right then and there.

And to be honest, that's only a SMALL exaggeration.

There's a post on here about a guy who is all pissed off because women should "give men a sign" that she is interested in him by being polite and nice to him...

So what?

So that gives you an understanding of what men think if we're polite and nice to them. "She wants to FUCK ME SO BAD!!! YEAH!!!!"

That is why. Bottom line. Because when a woman IS polite and friendly, it's open field to hit on her and sexually harass her.

Guys like you get caught in the crossfire.

I'm really sorry for that, but please don't blame women entirely for it. It's hard to retain that niceness and politeness in the face of some of the nasty, crass, bastard things that guys do the moment you ARE courteous and friendly towards them.

When I was young, I was fairly attractive. Slightly above average. As a result, most of the time when I was kind and polite and friendly towards guys, I got literally and actively STALKED.

So don't take it personal. They don't know you. You could be saying 'hi,' or you could be scoping her out for "You want to FUCK ME, don't you!!!"
