You need to understand, however... Grammar is set up to convey meaning via words. Deaf people skip the waste of time conveying this meaning via words, and USE THEIR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS INSTEAD. Works wonderfully face to face, but falls flat when we're back to using english words on the internet. |

Poor grammar, mangled syntax, and use of the impersonal prounoun when you're talking about people prove it. If I wanted to constinue your poor syntax it would be Are there any deaf people who visit GLP? Still sucks. Get to the point damn it. "Do deaf people visit GLP?" We're fucked. To me it would be that the guy on the right hand side is 'better' at signing music than the other one. Of course one of the big differences is that the guy on the right does use facial expressions, while the other barely moves his lips. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 759743 You need to understand, however... Grammar is set up to convey meaning via words. Deaf people skip the waste of time conveying this meaning via words, and USE THEIR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS INSTEAD. Works wonderfully face to face, but falls flat when we're back to using english words on the internet. I've worked for an IP Relay company for 6 years and can say this is fairly accurate. Hearing impaired individuals use body language such as facial expressions or slight body motions to convey meaning of some words or phrases. One ASL phrase may have two or more completely different meanings based on if you were nodding or not, for example. However, that is talking face to face, or over video relay. When you throw in text to the mix and remove the "physical" aspect things get kind of complicated. As AC 9743 said, "Deaf people that learn ASL without getting a full grasp on English tend to make these grammar mistakes." This is because ASL translates "roughly" so to speak to English. (Just as other languages do) "The red ball bounced down the street" might be put across as "The ball red bounce the street down." for example. Add in an individual who ONLY learns ASL fluently, and "skims" English, you get many more roadblocks. I do have to admit this example MIGHT be very very far off, as I am not "professionally" trained in ASL and I am rusty from my relay days. All I wanted to do with this post is add some clarification. And to the user who posted something about the video being "pointless as they can't 'hear'"... This only displays how little you really know of the deaf community. Just FYI, a lot (not all) of deaf individuals "feel" the music. They feel the vibrations of the different tones low and high and "listen" in that means. ASL simply put across the lyrical message in the song. The beat, volume, and rhythm are "heard" through touch. The more you know |
