The desktop icons does not show up. Is there a way to fix it besides entire C: hard drive wipe and reinstall the operation system? Quoting: mrzackYes there is... when booting up the PC, keep hitting the F8 key, which will bring you to a menu. Select "Start Computer in Safe mode." Run multiple virus scans, clean the system, rinse, repeat. |

Beyond one's own mind there is no dazzling light to come shining in from outside to wake one up. If one recognizes one's own intrinsic State as pure from the beginning and only temporarily obscured by impurities, and if one maintains the presence of this recognition without becoming distracted, then all the impurities dissolve. This is the essence of the Path-namkhai norbu. Why is there a legend about the descent of Christ into hell? The Teacher addressed the lower strata of the astral world, saying: Why, by cherishing earthly thoughts, bind oneself eternally to Earth? And many revolted in spirit and rose higher. Meh, don't even dual boot... just use Wine for playing games (Mandriva integrates Wine into the system on install) or use Crossover Office... cheaper and easier, less chance for headaches. |

But, there are around 3000 music files on it that I don't want to lose. Try downloading Knoppix to a CD, then go through your BIOS screen (hold down the F8 key while starting your computer) to read the CD. Knoppix is a linux-based program that is complete on the CD. You may be able to fix your hard drive using the Knoppix CD. [link to www.knopper.net] |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 889363 United States 02/20/2010 03:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I had some kittens that was so bad it re-wrote my registry I could not start task manager, start regedit and I could not restore to any previous point. I researched on line for days trying to find scripts or whatever to re-write the registry to no avail. Finally, I just had to recover from a dedicated partition on my hard drive. Luckily the computer I had bought had a partitioned hard drive and the initial software and settings installed. |

It's the only way to be sure. If you save all your drivers and can reinstall the OS its only a couple hours work. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 889363If you search for "Default X Registry" where X is your system (Vista, XP, etc.) there are a number of scripts and .reg fixes that will put the registry back to default. I have a couple on a flash drive (I fix systems and networks for a living.) Having said that, the majority answer here IS still the best... leave M$ bondage and use Linux. |

WobblyJim User ID: 471837 United Kingdom 02/20/2010 04:08 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | best if you can boot the machine up with something other than Windoze. Avira AntiVirus offer you a free download of a rescue CD based on Linux. using another computer with a cd burner : download the tool from the link below. burn it onto a cd put the cd in the infected machine and power it off and on. If you have set the bios option to allow the machine to boot from the cd, the machine will ignore the windoze C drive and boot off the CD into the rescue package. You can then scan and repair the C drive. If this works, you can boot up as usual from the C drive after removing the CD. [link to www.free-av.com] Just double-click on the rescue system package to burn it to a CD/DVD. You can then use this CD/DVD to boot your computer. The Avira AntiVir Rescue System is updated several times a day so that the most recent security updates are always available. Once in safe mode go to programs ,accesaries, systemtools, system restore. Restore system to time before you had this problem. All will be fixed. |
