Any other dudes out there that sew? Any tips/suggestions? Quoting: ChildofGodI don't care if you think I'm a sissy or whatever for wanting to know how to sew. I know who I am and a sissy isnt it. Anonymous Coward User ID: 783199 United Kingdom 02/22/2010 09:21 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | give it a rest will ya..any pratt can sew. apart from the usual lessons at my old school we did 5 years of farming on the self sufficient school farm livestock and crops ,sewing to the point of making cushions curtains ect.ie to a good enough standard. and cookery where we did half the year learning about proteins, fats, starchy foods and basic food chemistry and how it effects the body.. All the rest was the usual stuff most schools teach. And this was a comp school in Essex... i do have to laugh when i hear how poorly equipped kids are now days to deal with the real world. sewing will be the least of your problems if we get an apocolyptic outcome. |
CuriouslyIncognito User ID: 148340 United States 02/22/2010 09:28 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | LOL NO WORRIES OP.. Running around the woods nekkid with no shelter in the cold durring a disaster doesn't sound too "manly" to me ;) * just a thought I had * sorry :) now this certainly isn't tailor quality, but it will do in a pinch. :) Now if I could just figure out those sewing machines I bought I would think me a miracle worker ! there is a product many of us "non sewing" people love. It is a double sided tape that can be purchased at any material shop. It is used for hemming and such and holds through the washer and dryer ;) Last Edited by CuriouslyIncognito on 02/22/2010 09:31 AM ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "....So I told my Mom I was a prostitute because I didn't want her to know I was HERE doing This Shit !!! Anonymous Coward User ID: 570771 United States 02/22/2010 08:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think it is a good idea that men learn traditional chores of women and vice-versa. Learn to crochet/knit also to make blankets, caps, gloves, etc. Get a good book on subject and it's easy to self-teach. My husband and I taught each other the things that were traditionally the other sex's to know. He passed away prematurely but I know how to do many things to survive that are traditionally a man's job. I would rather he was here to do them but he's not and I am able to survive. It was his idea to do this and it was a great gift. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 895989 United States 02/22/2010 08:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Sewing can be very manly, reupholstering a car, sewing canvas to make a tent or a new ragtop, using industrial thread to repair the broken straps on a load handler for your truck(since the Chinese are so cheap about manufacturing). All very useful, and manly. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 898186 United States 02/22/2010 08:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My mom taught me to sew and my dad taught me to chop wood. They both taught me how to cook. I guess they weren't so bad after all. Learning to make simple repairs will save you a ton of money on your clothes. Look for a sewing machine for cheap at garage sales if you want to make anything of size. I got a killer 70's model for $5. I think our culture misses the simple joys of making things work when we just head to walmart to get another shitty ass pair of jeans for $11. rant fest sorry |

I still might be able to with an old Adler machine and good thread. Learn as many skills as possible, you never know what'll come in handy. But I do suggest taking a class or two in order to learn the basics. The rest can be acquired through reading a good manual and by trial and error. Buy a cheap beginner's pattern and some material and start in--don't make the mistake of thinking your beginning project should be a lined silk suit. I suggest doing household sewing first (pillows, curtains) as the lines are straight and you will get a feel for the machine. |
