The Future Of Energy? Bloom Energy Boxes Already Power Google, eBay, Others

by MG Siegler on Feb 22, 2010
Over the past several years, there’s been no shortage of talk about alternative energy, and its potential to change the world. The problem is that most of it is just that — talk. But tonight, a report that aired on 60 Minutes showed one alternative that is not only real, it’s already being tested by companies such as Google and eBay. You simply have to watch this.

Bloom Energy are producing tiny fuel cell boxes they call “Bloom Boxes.” Two of these can apparently power a U.S. home (and only one for homes in countries that use less power). So how small are they? Look at the picture above, each device isn’t much bigger than a standard brick. Of course, they need to be surrounded by a larger unit that takes in an energy source (such as natural gas). But still, these units look to be about the size of a refrigerator and can easily fit outside of a home, providing it with clean, cheap energy.

Currently, these boxes cost some $700,000-$800,000, but eventually, founder K.R. Sridharenvisions one in every home — and he thinks he can get the cost below $3,000 for a unit to make that happen. And he’s talking a 5 to 10 year timeframe for this.

Naturally, there are plenty who are skeptical of something like this ever working. There have been no shortage of fuel cell ideas over the years, but none get their own segment on 60 Minutes showing working units. And none get to highlight the fact that they’re already installed at companies like Google, eBay, FedEx and others. In fact, four of these Bloom Boxes have apparently been powering a Google datacenter for the past 18 months. eBay says their five boxes have saved them over $100,000 in electricity costs over the past nine months.

Bloom Energy also has former Secretary of State Colin Powell on its board of directors, and he talked up the Bloom Boxes on 60 minutes tonight also. And the company has something in the neighborhood of $400 million in funding from the likes of Kleiner Perkins and others. Kleiner’s John Doerr is also featured heavily in the 60 Minutes segment, talking about why he thinks this company can change the world perhaps even in a more profound way that another company he backed, Google, has. Bloom Energy was Kleiner’s first green tech investment.

Again, just watch the video and decide for yourself whether to be skeptical or amazed at this point. Right now, I’m definitely in the latter camp considering this thing is already being tested out. Apparently, Bloom Energy is due for a big formal public unveiling on Wednesday in San Jose (they have a countdown up on their site) —expect to hear a lot more then.

sorry OP - this is horseshit

Scalar techniques are superior and I also posted afew days ago about using diode arrays to rectictify ac radio waves - right down to the cosmic noise floor.

That's real free energy and it doesn't cost a wanking 1 million pounds!!!

And this got pinned - outrageous - too few learned people around

the next crappy move that the TPTB will 'let' us have is radionucleitide cells

you are better off teaching yourselves - and making your own equipment like I do

Don't wait for other people to do it

'Don't wait for other people to do it' - that should be GLP's motto

So far I see that this fuel cell requires oxygen and an unnamed fuel. Anybody know what the fuel is and how much is required?

It sounds like possibly a more effecient way to convert one form on energy (fuel) to another (electricity), without the mechinical step.

Never mind..natural gas at half the rate needed with current technology.

But not a fuel 'source' as implied

Re: AMAZING NEW TECH: The Future Of Energy! Bloom Energy Boxes Already Power Google, eBay, Others
Fuel cells have been around that will crack (convert) natural or propane gas to hydrogen. The availability of bringing hydrogen to your house is nil, but most have access to the former types. There are home units, the size of a AC condenser that have been proven. Costs are not 700K but still not to where that average home owner will front for one. Aside from the promise of the low cost of power, and low environmental emissions, the additional advantage is a distributed and independent infrastructure as opposed to a grid system. The lack of power in most natural disaster is that the failure is in the lines exposed and usually cut or downed, etc and therefore no power to your home. Provided your home in not underwater, a fuel cell could provide uninterrupted service to your home as the source is right there and the fuel can be remote via bottled propane. Now the reality of this is that the big power companies that have a bazillion dollars invested in delivering you electricity will not let that happen. There is absolutely no reason why homes cannot support their own power needs with the technology that is available right now….

how are they going to get costs down from 800k a unit to 3k. that seems like a stretch.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 897882

$300,000 is for a BIG one. To run a house it would already cost less. He showed the 2 items in his hand that are the actually batteries. For a home unit you would just add the rest which is low tech so doing it for 3k now might even be possible, if they were making many thousands of them. They are just making huge ones now because it makes more sense because it's a lot easier to deal with 4 customers and build 1 unit a day than it is to built 10,000 a month and deal with many more customers. Next they will probably approach local sub stations.

Bill R's interview was last summer if my memory serves me right and the addition on the link about the Anglo Saxon Mission has been pointed to here on GLP over this weekend. Interesting stuff, however, their is a question about the validity of the Heather information where part of this comes from.

I have heard interviews of these guys and I am not convinced. For starters, if you REALLY cared about getting the technology out to the world you would release simple plans to the world (e.g via the internet) and allow people to make, experiment, and ultimately produce the devices themselves. You could still make money on it through innovation because you would have a leg up on the competition. WITTS (their organization) is either deceiving people or naive.

The (old) school system I came from had teachers that were adamant about identifying "THEY" and it worked into my life to the point that I want people to think about who "they" are as well.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 842974

1.The energy grid loses roughly HALF of the energy put into it

2. Generating power ON SITE where its used cuts the amount of fuel you burn IN HALF.

3.Building new high tension power transmission towers is hard.
..Building new pipe lines for natural gas is easy.

4.America has MASSIVE amounts of natural gas

5.They can also run on methane from decomposing garbage and sewage.

Well that's a no-brainer.. if the bloom box realizes savings of up to 15% then we can expect the source costs of natural gas to go up 20% the day these guys decide to go public.

We will never have a cheaper source of energy under this current regime.
