Quoting: The Seven Inch SamuraiI'm thinking of emigrating to Canada from UK in the next 6 months. Any areas that I should avoid? My partner & I both work for the NHS here, so we can get in on the skilled migrant visa. Couple of questions: Firearms - can I has one (or more)? Drugs - is the herb plentiful over there? Houses - worth buying one or is your economy / housing market the same as over here? Thanks muchly! Ben Firearms - permits needed Drugs - yes Houses - depends on where you live, there are lots of horse owners too... |

No biggie. What u need a gun for anyway? We Canadians are harmless. Ha ha. Drugs - it's our number 1 cash crop. Good and plentiful. Housing - depends where you settle. Here on the prairies, you can still buy a nice house for less than $200,000. It is a wonderful, blessed life that we lead in Canada. I hope you enjoy your new home. |

You might want to research weather here before moving. Some areas are freezing cold, and snow up to your you know what in the winter. Other areas are milder, and rainier. If you aren't used to snow and cold, it could make your first few years here miserable. |

I can swear proficiently in French, but that probably won't help me much in job interviews. Doesn't have to be a guberment job, I'm information/business analyst, database designer. Anyone here got a job going for a hard working Englishman? :St George: |

| TARDIS User ID: 832032 02/22/2010 12:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | AREAS TO AVOID: Atlantic Canada, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Yukon, Northwest Territory, Nunavut. Alberta(if you hate Conservatives and cowboys). Avoid Toronto, too. HANDGUNS: You can still own a handgun in southern Ontario, but better to not share with everyone you have one. There is quite a controversy about them. DRUGS: Cheap and abundant! HOUSING MARKET: Around southern Ontario it's still very strong. Our home has tripled in value in the last two years. There are quite a few counties around here where the hi-tech industry is still the primary source of jobs. It's keeping people employed, rich and keeping the housing market strong. |

Quoting: Sandrutzu12![]() Hmmmm.... well I guess it all depends on the person. If you don't like Chinese people maybe Vancouver might not suit you. If you don't like them god awful Brits then don't come here to Victoria BC. If you don't like Innnnndians, then maybe avoid Lethbridge Alberta or the Queen Charlottes. If you don't like Hindu's Seiks and the like, Vancouver again. If you really don't like Eskimos, then avoid Nunavut. If the French are still not your cousins, then Quebec is not for you. English signage is illegal and they have tattletale squadrons like Nazi youth groups to ensure the law is obeyed. If you don't like tractors, forget the prairies. Watch out also for pulp and paper mills. Avoid those cities and towns at all cost. Children get asthma and it stinks to high high heaven. Winnipeg, coldest city on earth. Most mosquitoes on earth in the spring. If you don't like Ukrainians or Icelanders don't go there. Like the Calgary Stampede? It gets hot in Calgary in the summer. Dislike American Texan cattle barons and oil men? Don't go there. Don't go there if you are not a heavy drinker. That's all they do. Small town or big city? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 628775You all mainly speak english there dontchya? My french is pretty crap. Then don't move to Ottawa looking for a government job! SDM Yup, go to Vancouver instead. They don't speak French, but it would help if you can speak Mandarin! May I tweak the above advice just a little? Change "Vancouver" (cost of living far too expensive!) to "Vancouver Island". Mildest weather in the country. Fabulous, bountiful nature at your doorstep. Still affordable. | Narin the Squtz User ID: 869747 02/22/2010 12:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | What's wrong with Atlantic Canada? If you like hunting, low house prices, easy going lifestyle, no crowded cities and lots of 'interesting' weather, consider New Brunswick or Nova Scotia. Halifax (Nova Scotia) or Moncton (New Brunswick) both have relatively strong job markets, especially if you're a professional. You can buy a nice 1800 square foot house in the city in Moncton for like $160k. If you want to live outside the city you can get a nice place with acreage for $120k and still be able to commute within 30 minutes. There are french people in Moncton yes, but there's at least as many english people and there's lots of non-bilingual english only. Halifax is almost all english - I think there's more arabic speaking people there than french. Plus, don't forget Canada is a huge country. New Brunswick is actually closer to England than it is to Vancouver. If you ever wanted to visit home, the east coast will be much easier (and cheaper). |
