he Argentine Foreign Minister, Jorge Taiana, is to meet Ban Ki Moon, the UN Secretary General, tomorrow and hopes to force Britain to abide by UN resolutions requiring dialogue.

The Venezuelan President, Hugo Chávez, was characteristically vocal in his support for the Argentinians, offering Buenos Aires military support. Characterising Britain as an imperialist relic, Mr Chávez demanded the return of "Las Malvinas", as they are known to Argentinians.

“The English are still threatening Argentina. Things have changed. We are no longer in 1982,” he warned. “If conflict breaks out, be sure Argentina will not be alone like it was back then.”

Falkland islanders reacted with resolve this afternoon, claiming that the upping of the rhetoric by Mrs Kirchner was based around her own declining political fortunes domestically.

Jan Cheek, a member of the eight-strong Falklands Legislative Assembly, said: "A very strong view in the islands is that they are using us as they have done many times in the past, when a government is in trouble it does tend to try and deflect attention to the Falklands issue, on which they think they can united the people."

She added that she supported the installation of the British oil rig: "We firmly believe that we have a right to work on our own resources. Constitutionally those resources are ours to develop."

And she said she did not believe the Mexican summit's support for Argentina would have much impact, saying Latin American forums had made similar declarations in the past. "We've seen this happen so many times before."

Neither did she believe the shipping controls would impede operations. "It's very much business as usual for shipping around the islands," she said. "I would be very surprised if they interfered with any shipping in our seas."
