DYING DRUG ADDICT REFUSED 2ND LIVER TRANSPLANT
Me personally, I think that if she screwed up her 1st chance, then she should not get a 2nd chance:

Claire Murray is a 24-year-old mother of two who has only months to live if she does not have a liver transplant, but she is being refused a place on the waiting list for a donor organ.

Her family knows her case will polarise views because she has abused heroin in the past.

She even took drugs after her first transplant last year to treat acute liver failure caused by 12 years of addiction to amphetamines and heroin.

That donor liver has now failed, and doctors at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital have told her parents, Michael Murray and Val Milne, they cannot consider her for a second transplant.

Ms Murray's family accepts she continued to abuse drugs after the surgery but argue that the success of the transplant may have been limited because of issues with the surgery and inadequate rehabilitation.

Nationals MP Vince Catania and Labor MP Martin Whitely are campaigning for the mother of Chloe, 5, and Taj, 4, to be given another chance.

Mr Murray said yesterday his daughter had been a happy and healthy A-grade student at a Perth private school before being diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder at age 12. She was prescribed dexamphetamines and began abusing the drugs, later moving on to speed.

"We feel one thing led to another, and ultimately her addiction, and that's when our problems began," he said.

Mr Murray said his daughter had been on the methadone program before her transplant and was deemed fit for the surgery but he did not believe she was properly followed up to ensure she did not continue to abuse drugs.

Ms Murray's mother had given up work to support her and she had been clean of drugs for eight weeks.

"She now has three to six months to live," he said. "We're very aware that if Claire goes back on the list it doesn't mean she's going to get one and it's not necessarily going to save her life. But everyone deserves another chance."

Ms Murray said she felt far more prepared and determined to make the most of any chance she was given.

A SCGH spokeswoman said the hospital operated a world-class liver transplantation unit that met Transplantation Society of Australia and New Zealand protocols for eligibility and had exceptionally high survival rates.

It denied that surgical care or post-operative treatment were lacking or contributed to Ms Murray's outcome.

Late yesterday, Health Minister Kim Hames said Ms Murray did not meet national guidelines for a transplant and it was not reasonable to provide an organ to her when there were seven West Australians waiting for their first transplant.

He said 19 liver transplants were carried out in WA last year, and three people died waiting for a new liver.
But he said the State Government was prepared to pay for his Mr Murray and his daughter to go to New Zealand for the case to be reviewed by a specialist experienced in "live" liver transplants, which used a piece of a liver from a living family member.

Not everyone does deserve a second chance. Forgiveness yes, but that doesnt me you have to continue to hand over livers. At some point you have to deal with the consequence of your actions.
I think this is a necessary to keep people from taking advantage of such a great gift. After all it required the death of someone else.

Yeah, blame the hospital for your daughters continued abuse of drugs.

It cannot be the little angels (scratch that, skeezy cum repository) fault.

Hell, she is entitled to a 2nd liver. ENTITLED I SAY!!

Guess she isn't Jewish enough to have access to black market Palestinian organs.

Forget the liver transplant. The family should take her here. They could probably save her liver, get the drugs completely out of her system and help her with her addiction. The children deserve a chance to have a healthy drug free mother.

she shouldn't have gotten the first one
livers are scarce and expensive
there are plenty of people who need livers who didn't destroy their own by their own poor choices
you control what you put in your holes
no one held her dowwn and forced drugs onto her to addict her
she picked up by choice, when she was not addicted
btw, i was a heroin addict for many years, have HCV, and will "need" a new liver before long
I don't want one
give 'mine" to someone whose is failing for some reason other than self-chosen selfish unhealthy pleasure pursuits
I already have a heart valve prosthesis from endocarditis
I don't deserve a liver over someone with organic disease or liver injury that wasn't self-administered

Re: DYING DRUG ADDICT REFUSED 2ND LIVER TRANSPLANT
I'm amazed she got one in the first place.

Often hospitals put upbarriers to alcoholics and drug addicts.

They have to prove they are clean for a year or so.

In that time they usually die.

Also if you have 3 people waiting for that liver, who will get it?

a) The drug addict

b) unmarried 40 year old man

c) 27 year old mother of 2

my guess is that the fact the drug addict was a mother skewed her chances.

Normally women with kids, children and married men get the organs first.

Single women, then at the bottom single males and addicts/alcoholics.

It's based on generalized attitude of "societal good".

Familt people contribute to society.

Children have potential.

Single women can contribute through marriage and children.

Single men and addicts are disposable.

No.

She had her chance with the donor liver, and messed up. She should not have another liver, she will likely just screw that one up to...TBQH.

However, I think the family should sue the pharmaceutical company that created the medication she initially got addicted to.

Single men die 10 years ealier than married men.

Generally:

Men die 5.2 years younger than women, spend their last decade in worse health, and die earlier of all the leading causes of death. For example, before age 65, twice as many men as women die of heart disease--100,000 more male human beings dead, early, every year. That's thirty times more men than have died, total, in the Iraq War!

All single people do is consume.

They are consumers.

They redistribute wealth that could be used to raise more people to enhance society.

Being selfish, these single males will create nothing, add nothing, and will have to be cared for by society (everyone else) when they grow old and feeble.

Why do you think animals chase away surplus males?

They don't want their weak and lazy DNA from polluting the gene pool.

Re: DYING DRUG ADDICT REFUSED 2ND LIVER TRANSPLANT
We have the technology to extend life well beyond nature. We all will die some day and we all hope that day will be as far away as possible. This may sound cold, but she would have already died had it not been for a compassionate donor and the somewhat rare life saving technology of a transplant.

Do people derserve a second chance? Sure. Is it something that can be afforded? Maybe, maybe not. It isn't neccessarily about money either. Somone has to donate a compatible liver. That doesn't happen every day. Many people die waiting for just the right match. Then there is the fact that she would be on a list of several other people who may have been waiting longer and may be in more desperate and immediate need. There is a lot more to it than just giving someone a third chance.

With the limited amount of compatible donors and other people who are also in need, it may be time for her and her family to accept that none of us is going to live forever and that there are grave consequences to continued life threatening drug use.

Unless there was no one else waiting in line before her and she paid for the procedure up front, it would be unfair to others and foolish to waste that level of resources on someone intent on killing themselves... again.
