GIANT ICEBERG THE SIZE OF LUXEMBOURG BROKEN LOOSE:COULD CHANGE WEATHER PATTERNS
Just ignore the propaganda reference to to 'man-made' global warming & read the rest of the article about altered currents:

-AN iceberg the size of Luxembourg knocked loose from the Antarctic continent earlier this month could disrupt the ocean currents driving weather patterns around the globe, researchers said.

While the impact would not be felt for decades or longer, a slowdown in the production of colder, dense water could result in less temperate winters in the north Atlantic, they said.

The 2550 sq km block broke off on February 12 or 13 from the Mertz Glacier Tongue, a 160km spit of floating ice protruding into the Southern Ocean from East Antarctica due south of Melbourne, researchers said.

Some 400m thick, the iceberg could fill Sydney Harbour more than 100 times over.

It could also disturb the area's exceptionally rich biodiversity, including a major colony of emperor penguins near Dumont d'Urville, site of a French scientific station, according to the scientists.

"The ice tongue was almost broken already. It was hanging like a loose tooth,'' French glaciologist Benoit Legresy said.

Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

Mr Legresy has been monitoring the Metz Glacier via satellite images and on the ground for a decade in cooperation with Australian scientists.

The billion-tonne mass was dislodged by another, older iceberg, known as B9B, which split off in 1987.

Jammed against the Antarctic continent for more than 20 years, B9B smashed into the Metz tongue like a slow-motion battering ram after it began to drift.

Both natural cycles and manmade climate change contribute to the collapse ice shelves and glaciers.

Tide and ocean currents constantly beat against exposed areas, while longer summers and rising temperatures also take a toll.

"Obviously when there is warmer water, these ice tongues will become more fragile,'' Mr Legresy said.

Since breaking off, the iceberg - along with the newly mobile B9B, which is about the same size - have moved into an ajoining area called a ploynya.

Distributed across the Southern Ocean, ploynyas are zones that produce dense water, super cold and rich in salt, that sinks to the bottom of the sea and drives the conveyor-belt like circulation around the globe.

If these icebergs move east and run aground, or drift north into warmer climes, they will have no impact on these currents.

"But if they stay in this area - which is likely - they could block the production of this dense water, essentially putting a lid on the polynya,'' Mr Legresy explained.

The Metz Glacier Polynya is particularly strong and accounts for 20 per cent of the "bottom water'' in the world, he added.

Eventually, the icebergs will die a natural death, but their lifespan depends on where they go.

Adrift, they could melt in a could of decades. If they remain lodged against the Antarctic landmass, they could persist far longer.

Vast iceberg 'may disrupt ocean currents'

The iceberg snapped from the Mertz Glacier Tongue
A vast iceberg which broke off the Antarctic continent this month could disrupt the world's ocean currents and weather patterns, scientists warn.

Australian researchers say the iceberg - the size of Luxembourg - could block an area that produces a quarter of the world's dense and very cold seawater.

They say a slowdown in the production of this water could result in colder winters in the north Atlantic.

The iceberg is currently floating south of Australia.

Dr Neal Young, a glaciologist at the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Research Centre in Tasmania, told the BBC that any disruption to the production of the super cold water - known as bottom water - in the region would affect ocean currents, and consequently weather patterns, for years to come.

"This area accounts for about 25% of the production of bottom water in Antarctica, and therefore it will reduce the overturning circulation rate," he said.

"You won't see it immediately, but it has downstream effects. And it will also have implications for penguins and other wildlife in the region that normally use this area for feeding."

Open water

The iceberg is sitting in an area of open water surrounded by sea-ice, known as a polynya.

Bottom water produced by polynyas sinks to the bottom of the sea and drives the conveyor-belt like ocean circulation around the globe.

Benoit Legresy, a French glaciologist, said the iceberg broke from the Mertz Glacier Tongue, a 160km spit of floating ice protruding from East Antarctica south of Melbourne.

It was dislodged by another, older, iceberg known as B9B which split off in 1987.

"The ice tongue was almost broken already. It was hanging like a loose tooth," Mr Legresy said.

"If they [the icebergs] stay in this area - which is likely - they could block the production of this dense water, essentially putting a lid on the polynya," he added.

Clearly this shows the ice is floating towards the arctic polar masses and the polar ice caps will be entering a period of growth again.
Just more pathetic feeble attempts from the murderers trying to destroy the world.

Wait for it. iceberg size of antartica is now floating around, wait a minute that is the stationary antartica.

Sick of CLIMATE CHANGE.

Now there's 2...

Two Huge Icebergs Let Loose Off Antarctica's Coast

The icebergs, weighing 860 billion tons and 700 billion tons respectively, are located in water over the Antarctic Continental Shelf, Young said.

"We expect them to head west along the Antarctic coastline," he said.

Young said it was not likely they would reach as far north as Australia, and noted icebergs are very slow movers.

Oxygen levels being fed into the world's ocean currents are now changing "and the overturning circulation currents will respond to that change," Rintoul said. Observing what happens "will ... allow us to improve predictions of future climate change," he added.

so you know that man made global warming isn't causing the glaciers to melt because....?

I don't know exactly why they're melting but to say oh just ignore the part about global warming while you read about glaciers melting is kind of asinine.

Re: GIANT ICEBERG THE SIZE OF LUXEMBOURG BROKEN LOOSE:COULD CHANGE WEATHER PATTERNS
Icebergs calf off from glaciers because the Glaciers are growing. In order for glaciers to grow they must receive more snow at a rate that is faster than it gets melted off. In order for their to be more snow, there must be more water vapor in that part of the atmosphere.

Some think this means there must then be more water vapor in the global atmosphere. (but not neceessarilyt true).

How does water vapor get into the atmosphere? Via, HEAT.

Some think that growing glaciers are because there is a warmer (hotter) global atmosphere evaporating more water into water vapor to be snowed out a the poles each winter.

So this is the logic that is used to show how ice bergs calfing off of glaciers can be seen as proof of Global Warming...

Do you see the flaw in their logic? I do.

Luxenburg is a little smaller then the state of Rhode Island(USA) I know this from being in the military.

Luxemburg is 2,586 sq km (998 sq mi), with a length of 82
km (51 mi)N-S and a width of 57 km (35 mi)

This has little or nothing to do with "Global Warming"! How about the fact the Earth's Axis is tilting at a slow and steady pace, platonic plates are on the move(they've never stopped), and humans have nothing to do with any of this. One large volcanic eruption distributes more harm to the "Earth" then we/humans have and could do in a thousand years. That don't mean go out and burn an automobile tire

The one and only true fact to know is, if you live near or on the coast of any large body of water you might want to consider relocating further inland. You roll the dice regardless of where you live without a doubt! (coastal residents are on the extinction list first)

I'm all about believing in a "higher power" pray or call who ever you want to save you/us. Either way the Earth is going to change with or without us.
