Anonymous Coward User ID: 899986 United States 02/27/2010 03:14 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | just go to tractor supply and get the largest water sistern they have...i think its about 1500 gallons....perfectly sealed.....you'll get tossed a bit, but when everything settles, you'll be on top of the water in your own boad...then you can cut the opening open larger and have a nice little boat....plenty of room for all you need.... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 898188strap yourself to the floor so you dont get tossed...cheap, efficient and failsafe... Top Notch Idea. This is meant to be leak proof. The sistern is a big plastic drum that is sealed. the opening on top is a screw in....you can rig it to screw it tight from the inside....then, you pack your sistern with everything you need, food, water etc.... cant sink..much better than a heavy safe....too many ways to get trapped OP... |

As this massive wave approaches I will lock myself in my padded safe where there are 2 oxygen tanks, food and water. After the massive tsunami hits, I will safely swim up with my inflatable raft and search for dry land. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 667950Idiot. and how do you know where your safe will end up? What if it ends up face down and you're unable to open the door? What if you end up at the bottom of the ocean? Doesn't matter though. The types of tsunamis you're thinking off will CRUSH that safe. |

Wraithwynd User ID: 717743 United States 03/09/2010 04:59 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Safe. Um no. Barrel - maybe. Not just any barrel, it has to be a barrel made of steel - welded steel in a barrel shape. You also need to think of flotation - so make it a double walled barrel with spray foam insulation between both walls. The exterior needs to have rubber on it. Think Tug boats with old tires attached so they can push against ship hulls without damaging their own hull. Oxygen tanks may sound like a good idea, but no you do not want to pressurize the barrel - it will burst... eventually. Instead you need to think of a CO2 scrubber - something that removes the CO2, leaving the pressure about the same. If you do a double hulled barrel shaped 'pod' you will have the advantage of the barrel shape to help prevent the pod being sucked down in maelstroms (whirl-pools). The barrel shape has been proven to be very effective. Have your supplies, water, sewage, CO2 scrubbers on one side which becomes the 'floor'. While the waves are flowing your barrel will roll and pitch and yaw something awful, but as long as you have all the weight on one 'side' the tendency will be for the barrel to right itself in calmer waters. Figure you will be in your barrel for a good 20 months - so carry lots of drinking water an think recycling water. Of course storage of wastes and of course (at the very least) 2 years of food. So this barrel is getting a bit larger... Sinkhole list: Thread: Sinkholes Updated 28 Dec 2010 find a sinkhole, add it to this thread, please. Anonymous Coward User ID: 1085867 United States 11/21/2010 12:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | thought about this before. a large plastic barrel made of fiberglass that you enter from the top. Designed to keep you upright. Bouancy is key, you don't want to be under anything. for any amount of time. The hatch seals to barrel with a valve that can be opened to get air from outside when stable on the waters surface. A long extended tube on the top would prevent water from splashing in, a snorkel type fixture. Would never work on the coastline but inland you would be able to escape the flooding and stay on top of the water. Supplies would be limited but you could incorporate other sealed barrels to your life pod that would make you safer and more stable as far as floating on the surface is concerned. this is doable and within reasonable cost. it would work but who knows what you would be dealing with after. |

When it is nearing time for me to escape, I will remove the screw and slowly let the water leak in to neutralize the pressure. THen it should be easy to open the safe once it is completely filled with water. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 667950unless the safe is planted door side down on the ground of the ocean floor |

Look into it, u may have a little problem getting the door open. If u have not, I would suggest taking at least a basic diving class. Buy a submersible, but there pricy: [link to www.ivccorp.com] |

Quoting: Operativeyou'll need external flotation devices, remote activated. What size oxygen tanks??...2 doesn't seem like enough, you should consider a re-breather/scrubber system for air supply. A Safe doesn't seem like the best designe for an escape pod, especially if there are massive tsunamis.. Submit your design and we'll take a look.. A strong plastic pod with 5 levels ,air in between, that floats below water level? |
