Air Force officers relieved of duty over loose nukes, sources say

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Four Air Force officers, including at least one colonel, have been relieved of duty in connection with the mistaken flight of nuclear warheads across the country, two U.S. military officials told CNN Friday.

Col. Bruce Emig, commander of the 5th Bomb Wing at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, was stripped of his responsibilities over the August incident, according to the two officials authorized to talk about the status of the case.

Also relieved of duty were the maintenance group commander and the munitions squadron commander at Minot, as well as the 2nd Operations Group commander at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, the officials said, without releasing the names of those officers.

The matter will be referred to an Air Force convening authority to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to bring charges or any other disciplinary action against any personnel, the military officials said.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the information has not been announced officially. Defense Secretary Robert Gates was expected to be briefed Friday morning, with the investigation's conclusions announced later in the day.

The investigation into the August 29 incident concluded this week. It found that nuclear warheads were improperly handled and procedures were not followed when they were loaded on a bomber and flown from Minot air base to Barksdale, military officials told CNN. The B-52 bomber carried six nuclear warheads on air-launched cruise missiles, but the warheads should have been removed from the missiles before they were attached to the B-52, military officials said.

The crew was unaware that they were carrying nuclear weapons, and the mistake was discovered after the flight to Louisiana, officials said.

A military official told CNN last month there was no nuclear risk to public safety because the weapons were not armed.

Military officials also said the missiles could not have been launched because of multiple security procedures required to be enacted before any launch would have been authorized.
