Homeopath Parents Jailed For Not Getting Proper Medical Help

BABY Gloria Thomas's parents, homeopath Thomas Sam and his wife, Manju, have been jailed for failing to obtain proper medical help to treat their daughter's chronic eczema.

Thomas Sam, who is now banned for life from practising homeopathy in Australia, was sentenced to eight years' prison with a minimum of six years.

His wife, Manju, was jailed for five years and four months with a minimum of four years.

The couple's infant daughter died from an infection her weakened immune system could not fight off in May 2002, after her parents watched her health "deteriorate before their eyes."

The Sams, from Earlwood, were found guilty by a Supreme Court jury in June of their daughter's manslaughter by gross criminal negligence.

The jury found the couple had breached their duty of care as parents by persisting with alternative remedies for their daughter's skin condition which "plainly weren't working" instead of seeking conventional medical help.

At the time she died, Gloria was severely malnourished because her body was channeling all of the vitamins and minerals she got from food into fighting the eczema.

Justice Peter Johnson said both parents had shown gross negligence in the treatment of their daughter, however he said Mr Sam had additionally breached his duty of care to Gloria as her treating homeopath.

“This case doesn’t concern the failure of homeopathy,” Justice Johnson said.

“Rather, it concerns the gross criminal negligence of two parents who failed to ensure that their infant daughter received necessary and appropriate medical care and attention for a treatable condition.”

The judge said while Mrs Sam’s level of culpability was below her husband’s, there was no excuse for why she was not more assertive in seeking proper medical help for Gloria.

“Manju Sam was Gloria’s mother, the person from whom, above all others, the child was entitled to expect nurture, care, sustenance and protection, and she failed the child in her most important duty, with fatal results,” he said.

Mrs Sam sobbed and hugged her husband before she was led away by Department of Corrective Services officers.
