Deadly Russian train blast claimed by Chechen rebels

Chechen rebels fighting to establish an Islamist state in southern Russia have claimed responsibility for a train bombing last week that left 26 people dead and promised more bloodshed is on the way.

The claim was made through a website that the rebels have used in the past to boast of "spectaculars", but it was impossible to check its veracity and some analysts warned the claim could be opportunistic.

In the statement, a group calling itself the Armed Forces of the Caucasus Emirate said last Friday's train bombing was masterminded by Doku Umarov, the Chechen rebel leader, and was part of a wider terror campaign that would target key infrastructure across Russia.

"Attacks will continue until the occupiers in the Caucasus end their policy of killing ordinary Muslims purely on the basis of religion," it said.

Last Friday, an express train travelling between Moscow and St. Petersburg at 125mph was hit by a homemade bomb, which caused the train to derail, leaving 26 dead and 100 injured.

The train was targeted because it carried high-ranking Russian bureaucrats, the statement said.

Russia has fought two brutal wars in Chechnya since 1994, handing power to a controversial former warlord to enforce relative peace. But as Chechnya itself has become more stable, other Muslim regions nearby have descended into bloody anarchy. Russian media have reported unconfirmed local sightings of a gang of men from the Caucasus behaving suspiciously in the area of where the train was bombed but investigators have not arrested or accused anyone so far.
