Close but no cigar... Happy Gilmore, The Legend Of Bagger Vance, and Caddyshack a distant fourth (its humor is wearing thin after umpteen viewings!)

I like any movie with deep philosophical content. Star Treck IV is another good one.

"Yeah, 2001 influenced me to drop acid."

Well, I recall I watched it first time in 1985, far later than those hippie days. That movie has a different meaning for me. Of course, being a 9-year-old kid by that time, I had to watch it several times later to understand it.

I still don´t understand 2001 completely.

But I think that was Kubrick´s point.

Then again, I didn´t understand the acid trip all that well either.

But it sure was fun trying! afro

That tunnel of color lights is clearly a trip to another part of the universe. Possibly far from the solar system.

Ah, but what does the StarChild represent? The next step in the evolution of mankind?

"Contact" (another fave of mine) was sorta like a less psychedelic version of 2001. 90´s versus 60´s mindset I guess.

Exactly. That was a crucial step in human evolution, as symbolized by the alignment of Jupiter, its Galilean moons and the Sun. Men, for the first time after 4 million years, found themselves free from the tools that helped them to survive, to which they have been introduced by the Aliens in the last important step in the beginning of the film. HAL was the ultimate tool created by men.

Two movies that scared the hell out of me when they first came out are THE EXCORCIST and ALIEN.
I remember people were freaking out in the theater.

Yes, and of course the tools almost became man´s demise.

Reminds me of the Unabomber´s manifesto, minus the bombs of course. :-)

Too bad he killed people in senseless fashion, because TK actually had some good ideas (not unique of course) if you ask me.

But I digress, as usual.

I bet you were disappointed with 2010. I know I was. There was NO WAY to follow up 2001, and it should not have been followed up.

I agree with you Idol, ´2001 - A Space Oddysey´ is one of the all-time great movies. My selection of golf flicks was more of a joke response (even tho I do love golf that much!).

2001 influenced a whole generation of directors as well. It was THE stoner movie for many people.

Indeed. 2010, seen as a separate story, is a good movie, although not exactly exceptional. 2001 is a stand alone story for me.

I see. The final sequence was quite a trip for those days. I can barely understand it after having watched it at least 10 times. For the majority of people it was just that: an acid trip.

Re: post ur fave movie
Kubrik was probably leaving it up to each individual what the ending meant for them. I got out of it that we were experiencing being reborn into a whole new world we didn´t know existed. A world that involved other intelligent beings from other parts of the universe.

Hey! I´m *IN* the Slapshot movie. hehe

I was about 9 when they filmed it across the Northeast US. Got the day off from school to go to the Syracuse War Memorial. Thanks Mom!!

I´m in the scene where Paul Newman jumps over the glass and goes into the stands.
