Road Trip through Mexico
I've been to a few countries etc...but there's this stigma that traveling in Mexico is dangerous.

I plan on driving during the day and staying in places like Monterey, Veracruz, Tampico, Mexico City, Lago de Chapala, Pacific coast.

I'll be driving a fairly nice Toyota Tundra. Should I be concerned?

Why is Mexico off limits? Any Mexicans have any tips? I speak a little Spanish and love Hispanic culture. Should I not venture south of the border?

No doubt! Funny enough I'm in construction and many Mexicans like Trump. Not the immigration stuff, but everything else. Hispanics are good folks. Conservatives need this voting block. Family folks who work hard.

I see benefits both ways on deportation so I'm undecided. We definitely need to shore up the dam now though.

I've driven all over Mexico. I've met travelling American retirees all over the country, in the weirdest locations. Just stay away from Culiacan and Acapulco on the west coast. It's a great country.

I'm not female so I don't know. I don't carry so no gun. I might borrow one though but I'm not sure that would make it through the border.

I know a Colombian who will not even drive through Mexico. They will steal your car and possessions as soon as you go to sleep in your hotel. Even if you catch them in the act, their cousin cop will suddenly show up and they will tell him that it is their car and that they are just taking it back. This is exactly what happened to the Colombian who speaks fluent Spanish and is pure hispanic.

That is if you dont get kidnapped or simply shot for what is in your wallet. It you are white, you are a target and your only hope is to drive a beat up piece or crap that they dont want and look dirt poor. It is actually a stupid idea to go there outside of a resort.

Much more to this story that we do not know. Where in Mexico? 6'2 compared to the 5'2 aztecs? Rich in a gated and guarded community? etc, etc, etc.

Simply go on google street view and pick ANY city or town and you will immediately notice something about Mexico. EVERY house, no matter how poor looking, has a wall or iron fence around their property and burglar bars on every window and door. Ask yourself why dirt poor people would spend so much money on such hard security and you have your answer about Mexico. Mexicans do not even trust their neighbors not to steal or invade.

put a decal of the virgen de guadalupe on your
windshield.

watch out for the topes, paches profundos, dogs,
livestock, burros, children in the road.

beware of traps set by cops at intersections
in the larger towns where they'll have some
dupe bump into you and claim you ran into him.

watch out for some slamming on their brakes
right in front of you and then robbing you
blind when you get out of car.

check that all gas pumps are set at zero before
pumping.

watch out for the places along the road where there
are absolutely zero shoulders and an immediate
twenty foot drop-off.

drink only bottled water.

don't dress like a typical doofus gringo tourist.

drive cautiously and curteously, . .and pray for
assistance from the angels and you just might
get back home ok with some fond memories.
