Bookstore Owner Stages Book-Burning

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Tom Wayne is tossing "Bonfire of the Vanities" and thousands of other books onto what he calls "the funeral pyre for thought in America."

The used book store owner in Kansas City said he decided to burn 20,000 used books he stored in a warehouse over the past decade after libraries and thrift stores turned down his efforts to donate the volumes.

His first book burning outside his store yesterday was put out by firefighters because he didn't have a permit to burn them.

Wayne says he will get permits for what he sees as a monthly bonfire until all 20,000 books have been consigned to the flames.

The risk far outweighs any benefit as the risk will vary from child to child.

Re: Bookstore Owner Stages Book-Burning
Y'know, it's probably some piss poor crap of a book collection if even thrift stores won't take them. Sounds like the guy is enjoying some free national publicity/advertisement, which is more than he'd get by just throwing the junk away. 20K less reader's digest condensed books is just fine with me. He's using the 'book-burning' meme to draw attention.

BRILLIANT.
