Original Message Today I was reading a few of threads on this site and decided to research the viability of building a simple and effective faraday cage.

I want to start by saying that I am not worried, nor do I expect a solar EMP or an EMP from anywhere else. However, I like to know things.

I began my research by reading about Michael Faraday and his design and mathematical reasoning behind the faraday cage. Next I read congressional testimony on the EMP issue and how the government shields their electrical infrastructure. Next I looked commercially available solutions and some do it yourself methods.

After this research I realized that a person could keep a few things around the house that would ensure, if necessary, they could protect important electronics. (I think what would actually be important is debatable and should be saved for another thread)

What you need:

-Cardboard Box (size depends on what you want to put in it)

-Duct tape

-Copper foil tape (or aluminum)

-Insulated base (not necessary, but why not)

How to:

You can either make a single layer or dual layer, depending you your level of paranoia.

Single layer:

-cover the outside of the box in a single, complete layer of duct tape

-cover the duct tape layer with a single, complete layer of copper foil tape

-cover the copper foil tape layer with another complete layer of duct tape

-place the box on top of the insulated base

-That's it. To test your box, place your cell phone inside and call it. If it rings, your layers were likely incomplete.

Double layer:

-Same as single layer but do the same to the inside of the box.

Let me know if you see anything I forgot.
