I don't have a link to anything so don't even ask for it. I'm going by observation only. I live in Central California and work 200 miles to north of my home, in Northern California. For the past month and a half or so I have seen some INCREDIBLE storm systems move into both areas. Dark, ominous clouds that stretch out for miles and miles. And yet, not a single drop of rain comes out of them. This has happened at least 10 times in the past month to month and a half. The weather reports are crazy too...every single day they change, it's like the forecasters are baffled.
A few weeks ago my kids and I saw the most amazing lightning show I've ever seen in my life. Lightning arcing nonstop for no less than 15-20 seconds at a time, then a 5-10 second pause and more lightning for 15-20 seconds at a time. This went on for well over 15 minutes. I have no idea how long it went on for after we left. The thunder was ravenous, it shook the house and the car. However, it was distant. Lightning flashes would occur and we timed it to be about 15 seconds away, that means at least 15 miles right? Sometimes there was no thunder at all...just tons of lightning AND, not a single drop of rain!
Then, this weekend, I finally got some showers, but nowhere near what the clouds looked like they were packing. I have been to almost all 48 of the continental states, and I have seen some of the most amazing thunder storms in tornado alley, the south and midwest. NOTHING measures what I saw with that lightning storm a couple weeks ago.
Here's my question:
How do we get massive storm systems with lightning and thunder and dark rain clouds, and not actually get any rain?
