[quote:Anonymous Coward 842983:MV8xNDU4NjEwXzI0MDU5NTEwXzcyMEQxRjcw] HOW OFTEN ARE CASCADIA SUBDUCTION ZONE QUAKES? The last known great earthquake in the northwest was in January, 1700, just over 300 years ago. Geological evidence indicates that great earthquakes may have occurred at least seven times in the last 3,500 years, suggesting a return time of 400 to 600 years. What they don't know is that 3,600 years ago was the last pole shift and they are not taking into account the coming one. [/quote]

As a resident of the city of Seattle I'm a little concerned about this pending doom.
Off the northwest coast along the Cascadia subduction zone, the Juan de Fuca plate is grinding against and slipping under the North American plate about every 15 months. Whenever it does deep tremors are detected that go on for days or weeks; enough energy that two weeks of these tremors released in the span of ten seconds would equate to a 7.0 earthquake.
There WILL BE a mega-earthquake generated when the conditions are right - it happens every 300 to 500 years. The last time plate slippage went beyond the break zone was 311 years ago, in January of 1700. A mega 9.2 fired off and the resulting tsunami reached Japan.

Researchers at Central Washington have determined that a tectonic shift in Cascadia could send a "shotgun blast" of energy into greater Seattle. The resulting shakes might be stronger than anyone has planned for and "everything from small buildings to skyscrapers would be at risk of collapse."

The ground would move 1.5 feet per second in Seattle.......
.........This is bad news for the North West for two reasons: one, because the combined long-duration shaking and high ground velocities raise the possibility that such an earthquake could inflict major damage on downtown Seattle; and two, areas like Seattle, Tacoma and Olympia sit on top of sediment filled geological basins, thus, AMPLIFYING the waves generated by major earthquakes.“

(1700 foot tsunami in an Alaskan bay!)
I have no doubt the viaduct and many, many buildings including skyscrapers would come tumbling down if this thing went off. And about 15 minutes later would come the tsunami. What form it would take in Puget Sound I don't know, but it wouldn't be good...
