A fire in an electrical switch room on Tuesday, June 9 briefly knocked out cooling for a pool holding spent nuclear fuel at the Fort Calhoun nuclear plant outside Omaha, Neb., plant officials said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Back in January 2010, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission cited the plant for failure to maintain procedures for combatting a significant flood, as previously recommended.
The plant is now engulfed in flood waters, which are expected to rise five more feet. Fairewinds Associates' Arnie Gundersen says that the plant is built to sustain current flooding but if any one of several surrounding dams breach, it could cause a Midwestern tsunami and lead to a situation similar to the Fukushima disaster, as there are several years' worth of very radioactive spent fuel rods in the cooling pools.
That's just the tip of the iceberg...
