On the upcoming Xbox and Playstation systems, there will likely be an extra charge to be able to play a used game. That's right...developers are getting upset that kids pay for their game, beat it or get tired of it in a few weeks, and sell it to GameStop.
Gamestop, then, turns around and re-sells it for a profit to someone who hasn't had the opportunity to play it.
Game developers are pissy because they see none of this profit.
...
They want to be paid each time their game is sold...whether it's new or not. The real catch is that you can buy the game used at a dicounted price no problem. You just have to pay extra if you actually want full access to the game. It's the same as you going out to buy a 99 Ford Focus and only being allowed to drive it if you pay royalties to Ford.
Why is this a problem?
You aren't going to be able to get games at a reasonable discount for buying used. Even though you paid lessr the game, you'll be paying more just to play it, so you might as well just get a new one.
Instead of whining about diminishing profits because of kids returning their games back to GameStop, perhaps they should just make a game that you want to keep. I have no problem playing games like Skyrim and Forza for month after month because they update with new content to keep you interested. Perhaps if developers don't want people returning their products, they should get with the program and do the same.
I won't be buying any new gaming system that supports charging you extra for recycling a used game. I suggest you all do the same.
