I have only a little experience with Tarot.  I do see that some might be put off as the Age of Reason has pushed us away from our unconscious/superconscious.
There was a discussion of types of decks preferred.  I would use the Waite deck only as it is the most common.  Therefore the images are stronger in the group mind.

The tarot is classical in that it has stood the test of time.  I want to mention a book closely related to tarot that has also stood the test of time.  First let me mention two other classic books on very different subjects to get the gist of what I am trying to say.
The first is on drawing.  ‘The Natural Way to Draw’ by Nicolaides will never go out of print.  It will always be in use.
The second is on acting.  “The Actor Prepares” by Stanislavski is the standard text.  It was written in the 1800s and will never go out of print.

Small bookstores can no longer survive.  It seems only large chains such as Barns and Nobel survives.  They only stock books that are known to sell.  You will always find a copy of Mystical Qabalah in stock.  It was written in the 1930s and never goes out of print.  It is now in public domain so is published by many publishers.

In a way one of the things learning tarot is good for is to learn "focus" see this thread Thread: mediums. trying to get in touch with someone..

I think it's how I learned to focus other skills I was probably born with. By learning to focus, you can learn to "not hear" other things, and hear the still small voice.

Again, I'm going to add to this first post off and on. Not feeling real great today.

As soon as I'm able to, I'm going to post a quick guide to reading cards. (Out of my head) Which is what I go by when I read cards. Combination of a lot of books and study. Tarot can also be used to REPRESENT things you want to draw into you life. But it doesn't have to be limited to cards, you can have an object represent your desired goal, and put it in a place that you frequent in the house, so that each time you pass it you're reminded of your goal. It will help keep you focused. Say you want to move to a nicer house. Find something like maybe a small replica that sort of looks like desired house. Place it in a place that you pass a lot and even if you aren't consciously seeing it your unconscious reinforces the goal.
