[quote:Punctuation Police:MV8yMzI0NDQ4XzM5NzE2MjE1X0Q5QjZDMEYw] How weird that I would find this question today of all days. I literally just read a passage regarding this question. In the book of 2 Thessalonians 2, Paul seems to suggest that there is some sort of "restrainer." One who holds back the "lawless one" --- holds him back, but doesn't eradicate his influence. Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, 2 not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of Christ[a] had come. 3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God[c] in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. 5 Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? 6 And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only *H(h)e who now restrains will do so until *H(h)e is taken out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. *I've added an asterisk next to the word "H(h)e" because there seems to be some confusion as to whether this should be a capital or lowercase H. If it's lowercase it would seem to imply that the FORCE that was holding Satan back is removed. Whether that be the righteous or some angelic being is beyond human knowledge. Clearly God cannot be remove -- He's God after all. Therefore, we must imagine some sort of force holding back this evil, and either because it is about to break or simply because the time is come, God removes it and allows Satan to do whatever it is he intends to do. The whole theme of the book of Revelation seems to be that we have a choice. That we have to prove ourselves worthy. At the end of the book of Revelation it states that Satan MUST be released for a little while. Perhaps this is just another cog in the mechanism of choice. One last "are you sure" offered to the faithful before commit to an eternity with God.
Original Message
"And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven with the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he seized the dragon, the original serpent, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. 3 And he hurled him into the abyss and shut [it] and sealed [it] over him, that he might not mislead the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After these things he must be let loose for a little while"- Revelation 20:1-3
