[quote:Simple27:MV8yMzkxMDE5Xzc1NzE3ODUxXzgzRjIzMzJE] [quote:Goofy for God:MV8yMzkxMDE5Xzc1NzEzODk3XzQ5NDY0RTQz] What happens under the Yellowstone volcano? The study from the GFZ now fills these gaps with a modelling result that maps the mantle plume consistently with the observation data. Accordingly, there are slow movements of the rock in the lower mantle of the Earth, which are directed southwest relative to the surface. Like the plume of smoke of a steam ship, the mantle plume moves from Baja California to the north-northeast to the Yellowstone volcano. https://phys.org/news/2019-10-yellowstone-volcano.html I have said all a long YSNP is a heart with veins and arteries spreading out to S and SW:hiding:
From your link: Steinberger concludes,"Our study contributes to a better understanding of intraplate volcanism and supports the hypothesis of a deep mantle plume. However, this has no impact on the risk assessment of the Yellowstone volcano." Now see this link from last year... Missing hot mantle plume detected beneath Yellowstone Using a dense network of seismometers recently installed across much of the US, the researchers used waves generated by 71 earthquakes to image the mantle beneath the Western US. And lo and behold, something popped out beneath Yellowstone: an anomalous cylinder about 350 kilometers across. It stretches all the way from Yellowstone to the bottom of the mantle, directly beneath the California-Mexico border. https://arstechnica.com/science/2018/03/missing-hot-mantle-plume-detected-beneath-yellowstone/ And one more thing... I accidentally deleted the OP of this thread during some glitch issues on GLP this morning (10/30/17).
I will be posting some useful links in the next post to make it easier for those posting so you don't have to scroll through a massive OP. :)
I had to delete the first two comments on this thread to do so, but wanted to keep them so I've put them below.

I also would like to mention that I know this thread has MANY pages and that it can be somewhat intimidating to join/chime in on a long standing thread as a new member/AC (I've experienced it when I first joined GLP), but we are a VERY welcoming group to those who newly join us. We are a small family of sorts who are all mostly interested in the same earth-related topics (quakes/solar/volcanoes/weather/etc.) and share info on each of those topics as well as 'off-topic' discussions. We genuinely care for one another here and even when we do not agree with each other, we ALWAYS respect each other.
I truly enjoy when new folks join us here. All that I ask is to show respect. :)
