We are -12 still.
Well..look at it this way..there will be less bugs come spring.
We have several bugs that need a long prolong cold to kill off. The Pine Beetle and the Ash Beetle. The Pine Beetle is killing the forests which shows it hasn't been getting cold enough long enough in years to kill them off. Yes, records have been broken many many times but the cold has only lasted a day or two. A report I saw a few years ago on it, said it needed to stay frigid for two weeks and that just hasn't happened, not even in the high country. It has been a couple of years since I went over the Rockies and it broke my heart to see all the dead trees. Even down here on the edge of the plains, pines are dying in mass numbers. Now the Ash trees are dying. Soon there won't be any trees if this keeps up. Elms are being cut down because of the Elm beetle - ours is hanging in there. Now if it kills of the dreaded EARWIGS from hell, I will be jumping for joy. I hate those suckers with a passion.
The pine beetles are still causing issues up here. I read an article a couple years back and if I recall correctly for them to die off completely the temp needs to stay below -15 for 3 weeks or something along those lines. We do get temps that cold, but they usually don't last for 3 weeks straight. At least the little fleas/flies that were causing EHD (Blue Tongue) in the Deer, Elk and Antelope were killed off last year or at least reduced significantly as I did not see or hear about mass die off's of the animals this year.
-15 for 3 weeks! Nope, those temps are not seen. Can't imagine that going to happen soon, unless all the volcanic activity we have been having, accompanied by less solar activity (that isn't happening) might cool things off.
I was a little off. 'Extreme cold temperatures also can reduce MPB populations. For winter mortality to be a significant factor, a severe freeze is necessary while the insect is in its most vulnerable stage; i.e., in the fall before the larvae have metabolized glycerols, or in late spring when the insect is molting into the pupal stage. For freezing temperatures to affect a large number of larvae during the middle of winter, temperatures of at least 30 degrees below zero (Fahrenheit) must be sustained for at least five days. http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/insect/05528.html It would be very unusual to get those kind of temps for the length of time needed. We might get to -30 overnight, but to have it stay that cold or colder for 5 days straight would require some drastic changes in weather. If the volcanoes continue to saturate the atmosphere with ash and the Sun becomes less active it may happen, but I think we would have bigger issues to worry about besides the pine beetle if that were to occur...
No kidding. We would be busy cutting those trees down for warmth!!!
On the positive side, beetle killed trees burn extremely easy and very hot. So we should be able to stay warm...at least until there's 30+ feet of snow on the ground covering all the trees and collapsing most structures.
You made me laugh with that picture. I know, it wasn't funny but still.... I am in a goofy mood and my family thinks I have been drinking! I FEEL good, that is why. Don't need booze when you feel GOOD
I accidentally deleted the OP of this thread during some glitch issues on GLP this morning (10/30/17).
I will be posting some useful links in the next post to make it easier for those posting so you don't have to scroll through a massive OP. :)
I had to delete the first two comments on this thread to do so, but wanted to keep them so I've put them below.

I also would like to mention that I know this thread has MANY pages and that it can be somewhat intimidating to join/chime in on a long standing thread as a new member/AC (I've experienced it when I first joined GLP), but we are a VERY welcoming group to those who newly join us. We are a small family of sorts who are all mostly interested in the same earth-related topics (quakes/solar/volcanoes/weather/etc.) and share info on each of those topics as well as 'off-topic' discussions. We genuinely care for one another here and even when we do not agree with each other, we ALWAYS respect each other.
I truly enjoy when new folks join us here. All that I ask is to show respect. :)
