It meant it was time to watch the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon. It was time to watch Jerry Lewis in action. Now, it's truly the end of an era. The MDA announced today it's ending the tradition. No more telethon. Lewis' reign was already over. That ended in 2010 when he parted company with MDA. It was first hosted by Lewis and Dean Martin in 1956 from Carnegie Hall. After that, Lewis was named the organization's National chairman, a voluntary position he would hold for 55 years. It became a weekend-long Labor Day telethon in 1966, usually kicking off Sunday night and running into Monday afternoon. The telethon ran 21-and-a-half hours in 2010, Lewis' last year as host, and had dwindled to a two-hour show the last two years. The telethon has raised more than $2 billion since its inception for MDA http://ri.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=A86.JyNwOERVC2cALdMPxQt.;_ylu=X3oDMTByb2lvbXVuBGNvbG8DZ3ExBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg--/RV=2/RE=1430563057/RO=10/RU=http%3a%2f%2fwww.usatoday.com%2fstory%2flife%2fpeople%2f2015%2f05%2f01%2fmuscular-dystrophy-association-ends-labor-day-television-telethon%2f26709717%2f%3fhootPostID%3d3e376232c3aa6a431bef64c0cdfe1b6f/RK=0/RS=HSN36vX_7_XKQMzNCcybqp0gudo- And it was thrilling to watch the numbers on the tote board ring up like a slot-machine jackpot as money poured in for the cause so near and dear to Lewis' heart. It became a personal endurance test for Lewis, who never said why he was so involved. He usually ended the event by singing You'll Never Walk Alone.
Wow what a difference from when he was hosting. : (
Sad isn't it? Now they are going to concentrate on on-line fund raising, Can remember on Labor Day when we were kids heading to the lake or beach the firemen would be at the lights in every town with boots collecting for MDA
Yes, very sad. : (
I accidentally deleted the OP of this thread during some glitch issues on GLP this morning (10/30/17).
I will be posting some useful links in the next post to make it easier for those posting so you don't have to scroll through a massive OP. :)
I had to delete the first two comments on this thread to do so, but wanted to keep them so I've put them below.

I also would like to mention that I know this thread has MANY pages and that it can be somewhat intimidating to join/chime in on a long standing thread as a new member/AC (I've experienced it when I first joined GLP), but we are a VERY welcoming group to those who newly join us. We are a small family of sorts who are all mostly interested in the same earth-related topics (quakes/solar/volcanoes/weather/etc.) and share info on each of those topics as well as 'off-topic' discussions. We genuinely care for one another here and even when we do not agree with each other, we ALWAYS respect each other.
I truly enjoy when new folks join us here. All that I ask is to show respect. :)
