Less than 80,000 left in the wild. Life span in the wild 15 years - in captivity 20-25 years. I have the old zoos with tiny pens. It is nice to see most zoos and refuges expanding the areas the animals are in.
Anything can appear like a great idea when Comparing to a worse case scenario They might live longer lives But are they happier compared to their wild cousins? :scratching:
Still catching up so this might've been mentioned, but I read that a giraffe in captivity can live around 10 years longer than if they were in the wild. I don't remember the exact numbers, but in the wild they typically live 15-17 years. April the pregnant one is 15 now, and she's so healthy they think she could carry one to two more offspring. I have mixed feelings. I don't like to see wild animals in pens, but I also recognize that many animals would be extinct if it weren't for us humans intervening. I will say, after spending WAY too much time watching April - she appears to have a nice life. They clean her pen constantly, give her treats, pet her and interact with her - and she seems happy with it all.
I understand the conflict. We go to the zoo all the time, it is a fun learning experience. I hate the pens but they are treated well, most of the time. Sad world we live in but at least some are not being hunted for trophies and sport.
I accidentally deleted the OP of this thread during some glitch issues on GLP this morning (10/30/17).
I will be posting some useful links in the next post to make it easier for those posting so you don't have to scroll through a massive OP. :)
I had to delete the first two comments on this thread to do so, but wanted to keep them so I've put them below.

I also would like to mention that I know this thread has MANY pages and that it can be somewhat intimidating to join/chime in on a long standing thread as a new member/AC (I've experienced it when I first joined GLP), but we are a VERY welcoming group to those who newly join us. We are a small family of sorts who are all mostly interested in the same earth-related topics (quakes/solar/volcanoes/weather/etc.) and share info on each of those topics as well as 'off-topic' discussions. We genuinely care for one another here and even when we do not agree with each other, we ALWAYS respect each other.
I truly enjoy when new folks join us here. All that I ask is to show respect. :)
