New Milford man allegedly carried loaded gun to Garden State Plaza during shooting
A New Milford man faces a weapons charge for carrying a loaded weapon to the Westfield Garden State Plaza mall on Monday night after telling police he wanted to help them apprehend the gunman who fired shots inside the Paramus shopping center, authorities said Wednesday.
Cody J. Donovan, 22, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon after a Bergen County detective arrested him at the mall around 11 p.m. Monday, as SWAT teams searched for a man who fired random shots from a rifle shortly before the mall was due to close at 9:30 p.m.
Donovan told police on Monday that he had a .45-caliber handgun tucked in his waistband, and that he did not have a permit to carry a firearm in New Jersey, a Bergen County Police detective, Ronald Salzano, wrote in an incident report.

Armed New Milford Marine who went after mall shooter wasn’t with ambulance corps, chief says
A U.S. Marine veteran who authorities said took a loaded gun to Monday night’s shooting at the Garden State Plaza responded entirely on his own and not as part of the New Milford Ambulance Corps, as erroneously reported elsewhere, a police official said this morning.
Cody J. Donovan, 22, “wasn’t with the ambulance corps that night,” New Milford Police Chief Frank Papapietro told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “He ‘self-dispatched’ to the scene of the shooting.”
Detective Ronald Salzano of the Bergen County Office of Emergency Management began following Donovan outside the mall just before 11 p.m. Monday because he was wearing a dark leather jacket and seemed suspicious.

Garden State Plaza mall shooting 911 audio released
According to a report in the Bergen Record, Cody J. Donovan, a former Marine police officer, went to the mall intending to offer his assistance during the situation.
Donovan was apparently wearing clothing similar to the shooter, which aroused the suspicion of a Bergen County police detective. He was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon.
