South America is becoming aware of its natural resources, the people and rulers are becoming aware of the fact that south america is the only self sustainable continent, we need nothing from nobody. The day south american countries work together, we will be an unbeatable power. Sadly, that is never going to happend. That's why North Americans and Europeans have always love the idea of a strongly fragmented continent, sponsoring dictatorships and using mass media to create hate between countries... So they can come here, dig our oil, mine our minerals, cut our trees, patent our flowers to create medicines, etc., you get the point. 
So now, we got to the point where big players need to own this land, because China is getting his hands on here like never before... And the masterminds are not very creative minds. War. Occupation forces. Helping allies against the evil. Then claim the price. Boom.
