If they had sufficient observational skill to watch any FEATURES on the Moon, they would notice the terminator was in approximately the same place in relation to those features. But they can't. They aren't familiar with how the Moon looks, they can't tell one mare from another, they couldn't find the Sea of Tranquility with an atlas. They think they are the one-eyed man in the land of the blind. Actually, they are more like the one-eyed man in the land of the sighted. They think they see what no-one else has seen.
