On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin requested that the Russian senate authorize the use of military force in Ukraine. Within hours, his request was unanimously approved by Russia’s Federation Council and the Upper House of parliament. The announcement comes less than 24 hours after U.S. President Barack Obama expressed “deep concern” over reports of Russian military movement in the region. It is now clear the Russian government is not listening to the United States and does not believe it’s in the best interest of Russia to allow the new interim government to sign a deal with the IMF.
In a speech earlier today, Putin expressed concern over the “extraordinary situation in Ukraine.” He also claimed the Russian military is being used as a stabilizing force to cull tensions in the region among sociopolitical turmoil that presents a clear and present “threat to the lives of Russian citizens.”
Russian citizens and supporters of Putin immediately welcomed military forces with open arms. Fears of persecution by the new interim government in Kiev have been looming since ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich was driven out of the country by what some analysts believe are radical nationalists who have been openly threatening the lives of opposition members.
