Original Message Update:

"The off-duty New Jersey police officer who was behind the wheel during a wrong-way crash that killed another officer and a friend last week in New York City had previously had his driver's license suspended for driving under the influence, an official said Tuesday.

Linden Officer Pedro Abad Jr., had his license suspended for seven months starting in October 2013, said Elyse Coffey, spokeswoman for the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.

The suspension stemmed from an accident in Rahway, New Jersey, in February of that year. A judge found he refused to submit to a chemical test and was also driving under the influence.

New Jersey officials said there was one other violation on Abad's record. He was cited after a car accident for driving with a cellphone in August 2012." - [link to www.yahoo.com (secure)]

"A New Jersey cop posted an Instagram of bourbon shots just hours before surviving a horrific wrong-way car wreck that killed two pals Friday after a Staten Island strip club bash.

Officer Pedro Abad Jr., in his midnight post, recounted his toast at a Linden, N.J., bar before the 4:51 a.m. head-on collision between a tractor-trailer and his wayward black Honda Civic.

Abad Jr., 27, was behind the wheel of the Civic as the car weaved into oncoming traffic on the southbound side of the West Shore Expressway, sources said.

Abad, two other off-duty Linden cops and a fourth friend were headed back to New Jersey from a late-night party at Curves, a “gentleman's club” featuring topless dancers, police said.

Incredibly, the Civic drove straight at two tractor-trailers in the pre-dawn darkness—with the first swerving to dodge the oncoming vehicle before the car plowed directly into the second big rig, said NYPD spokeswoman Deputy Chief Kim Royster.

Killed in the gruesome crash were Linden police Officer Frank Viggiano, 28, and passenger Joseph Rodriguez, 29, a source said. Linden cop Patrik Kudlac, 23, was critically injured along with Abad.

Surveillance video from a Staten Island gas station showed the Civic turning the wrong way onto a service road at about 4:49 a.m."
