Original Message The Nepal earthquake was so powerful that it changed the direction of Mount Everest, a geological survey has revealed.

Because the world’s largest mountain sits on the border of China and Nepal, and therefore straddles the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates, it is always moving in some way.

But according to research by the Chinese government’s National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation, the scale of the earthquake that hit Nepal in April was so large that Everest moved 1.2in (3cm) in a different direction to the one in which in which was moving before.
