With police standing guard and its membership feeling under siege, the Sons of Confederate Veterans started their national reunion in Richmond with a bang.

Smoke filled the air above Hollywood Cemetery after a booming cannon and rifle salute Wednesday morning. At the dedication of a new historical marker, speakers struck a tone of defiance and alarm over the ongoing backlash against Confederate symbolism, while also voicing hope for mutual understanding and respect.

Michael Landree, the group's executive director, said governments have a duty to take care of monuments erected to honor those who fought for the Confederacy.

"Today, I don't think that is happening," Landree said as he spoke to a crowd of about 75 people near the cemetery's Confederate pyramid. "And it's a great threat to our people. What is the difference between this and what ISIS is doing in Iraq?"
