Original Message according to some former senior NSA officials, the agency did have the technical capability in 2000 to determine that the calls to bin Laden’s operations center came from California.

Basically, the whole justification for the Patriot Act centered around NSA sentiment that the 9/11 attacks could have been prevented if only they'd had access to the meta data of the attackers, whose calls that had logged. Bush, Obama, and the NSA have all stated the NSA did not have knowledge of the attackers location already being in the USA. Turns out, according to former NSA agent-turned-whistleblower, the NSA most-definitely knew where the California calls to Osama Bin Laden's camps originated from...
