While the image of the "celestial lightsaber" is dramatic, Wiseman said it's a normal part of star formation.

The saber in this particular cluster of stars by "fireworks" of gas and dust near the center of the star.

"We can certainly see these outflowing jets that the star is emitting. These powerful jets are coming out from the poles of the poles of the star," Wiseman said.

This particular star cluster is located in the Milky Way galaxy.

"It calls to mind, I think the science fiction idea that the universe is very active and it is not stagnant at all."

While the image is compelling, NASA scientists are bracing for even more brilliant images in the future. They hope to look at the cluster with the more powerful James Webb Space Telescope in the coming years.
